Is it easy to get a job at UBS Investment bank in LA ??

Hi everyone

I'm interning at UBS Financial, and I'm just wondering if it is easy to go from UBS financial to UBS IB, especially UBS IB in Los Angeles ?

And, I"m from a non-target school. So, it looks like I have no choice but to apply online. Do HR people from BB banks really do read your resume ? what is the chance that they will take a look at it ?

Thanks

Complex models are the rage these days... I hear they are great stock pickers in the current market...

Zerocool -- I don't think there is a good answer to your question. Division transfers just don't happen often enough that one could determine who a likely candidate might be. It ends up being a combination of connections, hard work, the planets aligning, and starbucks juicing its coffee in the morning.

Overall, I think people overestimate the level of communication in large organizations. Everyone may be operating under the name UBS, but often times the ties end there. There may be some inter-company job openings, but i-banking positions probably never pop up on it.

As for reading the resume in the first place ... I did an online resume drop to a bunch of places and some actually called me back for interviews. I wouldn't say the resume is lost, but it does need to be exceptional to warrant an interview.

they have their own on campus recruiting system and target schools. Alternatively if you have a top BB summer position at another school contact someone in the office or UBS HR NY.

Helps if you are at a top undergrad business school OR top ivy. They are looking for decent finance/accounting knowledge even at the hiring stage.

The LA group only recruits at a few schools..they hire mostly from Michigan, Wharton, and Ivey (in Canada)..all of which are undergrad business schools, which certainly gives the impression that they're looking for really solid finance/accounting skills even at the entry level.

That being said though, their summer class had people from Northwestern and Ohio State (I think Notre Dame too)...and the whole class is like 10 people..so I guess maybe they're more willing to hire people from non-target schools than other top firms/groups?

Also, I think it'd be hard to switch to the LA office after interning in the NYC office. I've only known 1 guy ever who was able to switch groups after his internship..it seems like this is pretty difficult to do.

There are no USC analysts at UBS LA Generalist- just a MD who worked his way up and is now head of interactive gaming and USC undergrads who got MBAs at Harvard/ Wharton / Chicago

True about Ivey - they will be back in '08 tho most likely, they've had very very strong Ivey analysts over the past years. KKR, Ares, LGP, Bain Capital, TPG are all common destinations and someone told me CS LA took 4 Ivey summers although I have no way of verifying this.
