Lifestyle: NY IB vs. SF Corp. Dev.
And by "SF," I don't necessarily mean specifically San Francisco; that's really just short-hand for any non-IB job outside of NYC.
For instance, marketing at Amazon, corporate development at Kellogg's... it just seems that most of the discussion on this site skews toward finance jobs in NYC, but as a student, I'm just wondering if I should explore the corp. dev. path. That's why I'd love to hear anyone's experience (your own, or what you've heard from a peer) of IB vs. doing corporate development for a Fortune 500 company. Specifically...
NATURE OF WORK - Based on your experience or what you've heard, does the work in corporate development seem more or less rewarding than that of IB?
STRESS - I would imagine the stress level in corp dev is less than that of IB... right?
PAY - I would also imagine that, with the reduced stress, there is also reduced pay in corp dev... right?
LOCALE - Were you, or do your friends, seem happier living outside of NYC?
Hey MichaelScarn, I'm the WSO Monkey Bot and I'm here since nobody responded to your topic! Bummer...could just be unlucky but one of these topics will help shed some light:
No promises, but sometimes if we mention a user, they will share their wisdom: jl89 Tyler-Sheffield veton.kaba
Fingers crossed that one of those helps you.
Haha, great, thanks!
The lifestyle is better I think in Corp dev. Stress is far lower. Although so is pay. But it’s hard to get into Corp dev straight out of undergrad. Even if it’s possible, I’d recommend doing IB first as you’ll build the required skill set much faster.
Cool, thanks. Helpful, and didn't realize it's hard to get right into corp. dev. right off the bat. I think you're right, it's probably paramount to build the skill-set first, regardless of what area you go into.
As someone else mentioned, it's very hard to enter Corp. Dev. at a junior level. Most people enter that path as a mid-career professional. What you could do is go into consulting, preferably something deals-related, and then exit to Corp. Dev. That's a very easy move to make.
Alternatively, FP&A may get you on the right track but would take a few more moves to get there.
Cool, thanks. Don't hear much about consulting on this site... I'll have to search this site and hear what people say about their experience consulting right out of college. In the same vein, did you (or did people you know) ever do internships at one of the Big 4?
