List of non-obvious excellent internship opportunities?
Looking to start a list for some people of other excellent internship opportunities other than those which are obvious.
Of course IB at Goldman, MS etc. would be up there with the first that come to mind..
but what about a Summer Analyst Position at GE Capital? Consultant summer analyst at IBM? Corporate Development at Microsoft? M and A analyst at Google, or other top p.e or summer analyst positions at other F500 companies.
If anyone has experience that they would be willing to share it would be much appreciated.
GE Capital doesn't exist anymore
they still have a philly office
That manages what exactly?

This reads more like a list of internships that are 10x more competitive to get into than banking
Unusual Internships (Originally Posted: 08/06/2007)
I was curious to see if anyone had any experience with non-traditional or unusual internships. In particular anything along the lines of non-summer internships.
I'm asking because I'm a recent graduate who has no IB experience. I'd like to get an internship to get said experience, but I'd like to do it ASAP, which would be during the fall/winter. I understand that many companies wouldn't be able to dedicate the time or resources to 1 intern...but I'm sure there are some that have done this/would consider it, maybe moreso a MM or smaller boutique.
My thinking is in contacting as many people as possible to talk about custom tailoring something like this. I'd be willing to work unpaid of course and would hopefully be able to show the employer I could be a worthwhile prospect.
Has anyone done this or heard of it being done? Any input is appreciate, for better or worse.
Thanks.
That's what I'm doing right now, I graduated in film, worked in the nightlife industry/ modeling industry throughout college, yet managed to network myself into an IB firm. My parents are both in finance, but they didn't help me out at all. It was really by chance.

Did you get an analyst training program or what? BB or boutique. I am looking to network my way in as well and need some guidance. Anything tips?
Atro- That's good to hear. I'd be curious to hear more about the development process and how you went about securing that opportunity.
Were you simply cold calling/emailing and managed to get some face time...or was it arranged through friends in the industry? What was your initial objective, informational interviews or did you immediately request some internship opportunities?
Thank you again.
It's a boutique. I had known the guys because we both worked on the same floor and I kept up the relationship with them after I had left the company. We got along really great and when they were doing roadshows etc. I would do some work for them on the side. When I found myself out of a job I asked them about joining their team, and they had a space available. That's how it happened. I was met with some initial hesitation since I don't come from a finance background, but I have been here for two weeks and everyone has told me that I'm doing great. They already have me studying for my series seven. That's how it really happened. Complete fluke.

Not sure what you're looking for, but if you struck out at EB/BB/MM IB, I would start with boutique IBs. Should that not work out, anything transaction-related would be preferred. Past that, something related to finance, but if you enter FT recruiting (what little of that remains) without something transaction-related, you are probably DOA as a far as getting an offer is concerned.
thanks for the advice. I didn't strict out though luckily, i have two solid offers i need to make a decision on this week. i did the boutique IB at a small shop in NY my freshman year, then was lucky enough to land a MM, think Lazard in their ER division. just wanted to wanted to see what other opportunities are out their before I make my final SA decision which if all goes well will probably lead to a FT offer depending
You got nothing with that laziness of not even capitalizing "I".
Disney Corporate Strategy and Development is top notch from what I've heard.
Heard similar things. Would never have thought of media/entertainment
.
In addition to ones already mentioned, some of the insurance companies have great investment programs that include activities like market research, private equity activity, and venture capital funds....all in-house. The brand name might be harder to work with but the experience you'll get will be great.
Edit: I should also add that a lot of rotational programs include Corporate Development as part of the deal. Some of those are worth a shot if you think you can get that rotation, and given the current banking market environment I'd say it's not a half bad way to go.
If you're interested in the roles discussed on this sub-forum the big thing is to get M&A transaction experience (look at job postings for proof of this point) and any of these roles will give that to you.
I feel like this over looked by a lot of students.
Depending on your feelings towards FIG this is a great idea if you change your mind and want to move to IB later.
In a similar vein, some credit card companies also have versions of these programs.
