More important than the referral at your level

Because you screwed up the hirevue and there are a ton of interns who can do your job

If you didn’t bomb it, you’ll be fine. A referral will never get you a job if you screw up in the interview process unless it’s from your relatives who own the place

It doesn’t matter. Referral gets you the interview. After that it’s up to you. If analysts and associates don’t like you, no matter even if two EDs recommended you, you won’t get the job

Hirevue is considered a first round. If everyone received the invite, not sure what will the referral give you. I know one thing for sure, if you fail hirevue -> you won’t get through

You arent special. Do you know how many people will have “referrals”? You aren’t the only one buddy but spaces are limited.
You get assessed by a lot of people - HR, analysts, associates, VPs etc
If at least one doesn’t like you, you won’t get an offer. Why? Because there are so many applicants (who will also have referrals) that they will surely find a bunch who everyone will like
As long as you were able to give a proper answer at the end, you will be fine even if you didn't have a strong start. But I would say that the hirevue is more important than a referral. Referrals are mainly to get you an interview, and after that it's up to you and based on your own ability.
I had a referral from a Vice-Chairman at a BB (with like 5 other referrals) and messed up my hirevue and didn't get a superday.
I dont think you're screwed. I messed up my first few Goldman and still received a HV, however we had 7 questions no 3. The referral is a bonus though
