Oppenheimer - Investment Banking

Oppenheimer recently opened up their applications for the summer analyst program. Very interested in hearing people's thoughts on Opp's IBD as I know they have lost a lot of bankers in the past few years. Would also love to know what their best groups are, exit opps, if they pay street level and how many interns they usually take. Thanks!

Interviewed with them and know a few analysts/associates there... All in all I think it's a quality MM shop. Their best groups are definitely healthcare and m&a. Most of their good analysts end up in MM PE (although they even sent one guy to KKR last year) or stay on as associates. Apparently base pay is a bit below street but bonuses are above street, so I'd think all-in comp would be roughly street level. If I'm not mistaken they typically take somewhere around 6 summer analysts.

Can confirm everything @the_ram007 said, except it’s usually 6 SAs in NYC and a handful in regional offices.

That NYPost article has a bit of misinformation: Don’t have direct info about layoffs, but I do know that 3rd year offers were extended to 3-4 2nd years. If not getting a 3rd year offer is synonymous with being laid off, then yes, there were layoffs, but it’s not like every 2nd year got the axe. Also, not sure how much downsizing is still going on since they recently added MDs in Consumer, Healthcare, and DCM.

keyboardwarrior that’s not true for all SAs. If an SA doesn’t get a return, they have the option to reapply for FT, but there are definitely SAs who get returns directly.

Overall I’d echo what was said before about Oppenheimer being a solid MM shop. Besides MM PE/one guy going to KKR, quite a few analysts have also lateraled to BBs (one guy lateraled to Goldman this year) and higher tier MMs. Also a nice place for long term bankers.

Interview's gonna be very fit based, be sure to have a good reason for as to why you're interested in Baltimore. It's a strange mix of group focus in that office, Consumer and Business Services... But anyway, it's not technically OpCo proper, since that office used to be CIBC World Markets. Everyone I met there seemed happy to be there, there's a strong focus on fit and aligning with the particular office's culture, as they feel unique compared to the rest of Oppenheimer.
