PE Lateral / Exit at Senior Associate / VP Level

Throwaway for obvious reasons.

Has anyone had experience with lateralling as a Senior Associate / VP? Assume business-school is not an issue. How does that process typically play out? Have been out of the recruiting game for a while, so wondering about who the best recruiters are, timeline (how long it typically takes), and best practices for managing the exit and onboarding at the new firm. Anyone can share any perspectives?
