PIMCO Summer Internship : The Great Maze
Hello guys!
I am considering applying to PIMCO for a summer internship, however I can't seem to find what the hell each job consists in.
Basically you can apply to 3 positions: Account Analyst, Portfolio Analyst, and Product Analyst.
-
The easiest one is Portfolio Analyst which basically means portfolio management.
-
Now for the account analyst position they say, "Your primary responsibility will be to support PIMCO’s investment professionals to ensure delivery of the highest level of service to our clients." so I guess it may be some kind of Sales or Business Development position.
-Finally the one which gives me the most trouble is the Product Analyst position:
"The Product Strategy Group is a team of over 130 professionals responsible for financial market and portfolio expertise (both internally and externally), strategic business management, entrepreneurship and marketing for a wide range of PIMCO product lines. The internship aims to provide summer analysts with broad exposure to financial markets, portfolio analysis, client communication as well as product design / development and distribution."
Now I really have no fucking idea what that means....
Anyone working at PIMCO or who's done an internship there?
Thanks :)
I don't work there but am familiar with PIMCO and how they do things. Product Strategy group is an interesting spot. I don't know what the interns actually do, but the group is very interesting. Work very closely with PMs and Credit Analysts (sit in on their meetings) to intimately learn the finer details re specific funds. Work very closely with major account managers to provide detailed expertise on the funds and to help develop new product for those customers. Learn what a large client wants in a fund, work closely with PMs to design that product. Not actually managing money, but working very closely with and gaining a very deep understanding from those who do while positioning that info to the client base. Kind of the glue between managing money and distribution.
You'll find PIMCO to be a shop that requires, regardless of position, a deep knowledge of macro economics, world events, and how the two affect the markets. Huge focus on constant learning and staying on top of things. Very active management approach that generally creates alpha while lowering beta. That's a strong combo.
Oh nice thanks, then I might have an edge in the application process as my last internship was in economic research.
Thanks man, it's way clearer now :)
Can you confirm my intuition for account analyst, is it really a Sales role? (I know you said you don't work there, just in case you might know x) )
Account Analysts are client facing roles (institutional and financial intermediary). So yes, these are sales / sales support / account mgmt tracks. Essentially, at an AM firm, there are two main roles, managing money and distributing the management of money. Again, because of the culture at PIMCO, even the client facing roles require and demand deep knowledge of macro econ and world events. That's who they are and why they're unique. Arguably the world's finest fixed income asset manager with among the deepest research capabilities. An economic research background would play well in the interview process.
I think you're unfortunately a bit late. I know for a fact that product analyst has sent out first rounds.
That said, still apply and shoot your shot. I don't think you need to prepare too much in the way of materials so it's worth a go.
Oh shoot, I'm applying to the London office maybe they will have spots left.
Just apply, you'll be fine with the timing and good luck. Very competitive but no reason you can't succeed. They ultimately choose someone, so why not you?
I think you might actually be good then. I only know that the US did. I think EMEA is a later timeline, so take your chance for sure.
FYI - I do know with certainty they take a long time to get back to you so don't sweat the silence. Doesn't mean a thing. (Close with someone who just went through the whole process and will return for FT next yr.)
Thanks man, that's very nice of you
anyone received an invite to telephone interview? tips for preparing for what seems like a highly technical interview would be appreciated
Know duration. Be up on what the fed has been doing. Be up on current events and how they effect the markets. Be able to speak about some specific events. And of ocurse all the normal stuff. Why PIMCO? Why fixed income? Why asset management? They are a collaborative organization (as opposed to cut throat) so teamwork is very important.
If I may ask, which role?
account analyst
I Interviewed today online it was wack prolly get cut
Does PIMPCO pay interns???
Yes
Anyone heard back from London?
One of the reasons it takes quite some time to process is sheer volume. Was told last yr they had 12k applicants for 120 spots. It just takes time. It's very competitive just to get the hireview type questions. From there, very competitive to get the superday. I say this all not to bum anyone out, just for your to stay patient and focus on being prepared for the interviews. Fit is a BIG deal at PIMCO.
