PIMCO Summer Internship : The Great Maze

Hello guys!

I am considering applying to PIMCO for a summer internship, however I can't seem to find what the hell each job consists in.
Basically you can apply to 3 positions: Account Analyst, Portfolio Analyst, and Product Analyst.

- The easiest one is Portfolio Analyst which basically means portfolio management.

- Now for the account analyst position they say, "Your primary responsibility will be to support PIMCO’s investment professionals to ensure delivery of the highest level of service to our clients." so I guess it may be some kind of Sales or Business Development position.

-Finally the one which gives me the most trouble is the Product Analyst position:
"The Product Strategy Group is a team of over 130 professionals responsible for financial market and portfolio expertise (both internally and externally), strategic business management, entrepreneurship and marketing for a wide range of PIMCO product lines. The internship aims to provide summer analysts with broad exposure to financial markets, portfolio analysis, client communication as well as product design / development and distribution."
Now I really have no fucking idea what that means....

Anyone working at PIMCO or who's done an internship there?

Thanks :)

I don't work there but am familiar with PIMCO and how they do things. Product Strategy group is an interesting spot. I don't know what the interns actually do, but the group is very interesting. Work very closely with PMs and Credit Analysts (sit in on their meetings) to intimately learn the finer details re specific funds. Work very closely with major account managers to provide detailed expertise on the funds and to help develop new product for those customers. Learn what a large client wants in a fund, work closely with PMs to design that product. Not actually managing money, but working very closely with and gaining a very deep understanding from those who do while positioning that info to the client base. Kind of the glue between managing money and distribution.

You'll find PIMCO to be a shop that requires, regardless of position, a deep knowledge of macro economics, world events, and how the two affect the markets. Huge focus on constant learning and staying on top of things. Very active management approach that generally creates alpha while lowering beta. That's a strong combo.

Account Analysts are client facing roles (institutional and financial intermediary). So yes, these are sales / sales support / account mgmt tracks.  Essentially, at an AM firm, there are two main roles, managing money and distributing the management of money. Again, because of the culture at PIMCO, even the client facing roles require and demand deep knowledge of macro econ and world events. That's who they are and why they're unique. Arguably the world's finest fixed income asset manager with among the deepest research capabilities. An economic research background would play well in the interview process.

Quick question: I graduated this year so I am sort of a recent graduate. Can I still apply to Full-Time roles at PIMCO which is intended for Final Year students? If not, what other roles could I apply to? Thanks!

anyone received an invite to telephone interview? tips for preparing for what seems like a highly technical interview would be appreciated
