Position Trading Interview

I know this is last minute. I work in ops and a trader at my firm left today. I was asked if I was interested in replacing the guy as they want someone young. What can I expect in the interview/meeting tomorrow I have with a MDR and Director

This is at a large bank? Grab a Wallstreet journal, make sure you know what's happening news/markets wise. Know who Yellen is and what she thinks. Be familiar with the basics of whatever desk he's on (options desk, know some basic greeks, FI, know some bond math, commodities, know the terms etc) To be honest you probably have a much better shot getting the job internally than from a campus recruitment standpoint so as long as you're semi-competent odds are good that you're getting the job.

It's a major bank known for being a market maker. Definitely picking up tomorrows WSJ. I know a bit about Yellen but I'm going to do research tonight on her policies and her past as to why she was a favorible pick of the street. Thanks for the quick response.

No problem - can't believe I didn't mention this but make sure to have a desk-relevant pitch ready, and make sure you know where your company stock/major indices are trading at.

To be honest, I know very little about this particular desk as I work on another desk that is not remotely related. Also hoping they overlook the lack of any licenses as it's hard to obtain those in ops.

Focus on risk management and execution. IE, you enjoy transactional work (executing orders) and mitigating risk (small cap = lower liquidity so you're managing risk).

And be fucking passionate/high energy and take a chance during your interviews. Everyone hates a nervous and boring person on their desk.

I'm very passionate about wanting the job. I've always wanted to be a trader and to be honest, never thought I'd get as far as I am now (non-target graduate from no where near nyc). What's something I should do to show how passionate I am? As far as high energy, I was told this guy is really down to earth and well-rounded and I should be myself. It's a business casual environment so I'm hesitant to wear a suit tomorrow.

Still waiting to sit down with these guys but found out the desk is consumer staples so I've been looking at the latest headlines and doing research on top hits which is mainly the Tyson/Pilgrim battle to take Hillshire and possible Reynolds buy out of Lorillard.

I was looking at Pepsi/Coke/DrPepperSnapple as well as they may be affected by what's going on in Russia although not sure if I want to bring that up in the meeting as my approach there is more macro-based.

Read-across, brother. Read-across.

well done brother, wish you all the best. How did you get shortlisted btw? have you been letting the FO people know that you are interested to move and constantly banging their door? It is always a good story to see someone from BO able to transition to FO.
