Pre-Interview Questions for HR

I have a finance interview coming up later this week that they asked me to schedule 4+ hours for. This is a second round interview and the first one in person. I have never done one this long so I am a little unsure what to expect.

Is it appropriate to ask the HR/scheduler what the agenda for the interview is? I want to be able to prep myself if I am taking any tests.

I am studying for the Level 2 right now so I am trying to budget my time as effectively as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Many, many, many people make the mistake of wondering if it is appropriate to ask questions about the schedule of interviews/assessment centres etc. If you are assertive and politely ask HR loads of Q's, you can really give yourself a great advantage.

Always find out as much as you can!

  • Will there be a test (possibly more than 1), if so, how long, what format, can you use a calcultor etc. etc. [p.s. bring your own calculator]

  • How many interviews, 1-on-1, 2-on-1?, Competency based or technical? How long are the interviews?

  • Who will the interviewers be? try and get names, what grade are they? analyst, associate etc.

  • If there are any group exercises, find out as much as possible about these

  • Will there be an 'informal' coffee/lunch session with current employees?

  • Will there first be a presentation about the firm, before the interviewing process begins?

  • Do you have to pass any possible tests/group exercises to get the interview itself or are you guaranteed an interview no matter how well the earlier exercises go? [but don't phrase this question like I just did]

I agree with the above comment. Don't ask HR even half the questions joefish listed. Ask what you need to know, but don't start asking reams of questions in a pathetic attempt to impress HR.

So listen to Jay Buhner above, but ignore joefish. (Without meaning any offense or anything, joefish is still to complete his internship this summer, let alone start full time.)

not sure i agree with joefish. you should not need to ask HR that many questions. in fact, just asking them too many questions can alienate them. you should come to an interview prepared for anything, and PE interviews tend to follow a pretty standard formula. seriously, a prepared candidate should already know what to expect. i think it's reasonable to ask who you might be meeting with (though they don't always have the interviewer rosters set till the day before) and if there's anything they recommend you to do "in anticipation" of the meeting...and if there's something like a modeling test or whatever, then they will tell you. but mostly you should already know what to expect in terms of both technicals and behaviorals if you've gone through some of the other posts in this board

it depends on where you're interviewing. i agree that joefish asks too many questions, but for London interviews that sort of stuff is important to know because the "assessment centres" can vary a lot depending on the company you are interviewing with. in NY and Toronto, the interviews are 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 and you know what to expect more or less and you just have to have your technical down pat.

guys, I did indicate that these questions should be asked in a polite manner....not sure how this would "alienate" HR???.....but of course, do not go overboard, I was by no means suggesting that the OP asks all of these questions at once or anything lol

I would much rather be overprepared than underprepped for an assessment centre, maybe you guys in the USA don't appreciate just how much AC's can vary from bank in London, extra knowledge makes the difference, especially for the firms which are harder to get into

Just for reference, I have already completed an internship in IBD transatlantic :) I have also helped numerous undergrads at my university attain internships, and so I think my advice here is probably a little more valid than you may think

but heh, everything above is just my opinion, so to the OP, do whatever you want & good luck!!!
