One surprisingly good option is to go with an accounting firm...PwC, E&Y and D&T all have structured finance groups that are transaction based (actually doing due diligence and modeling for CMBS, CDOs, ABS, etc.)...it is excellent training, lots of interaction with IBs and many of those groups hire out of these advisory groups

I have also heard that working for a rating agency is a good entry point, but don't know much first hand about that...

i have a friend who works in a cmbs structuring group. worked in real estate before hand. you can get these jobs out of analyst programs though...

I'm out of college now.. been out for about a year. I have the Real Estate Finance textbook from Wharton that I'm studying, but I'm not sure what else I can do to prep. Seems like a great industry though, very interesting.

On the private side all three of those go together, no? I'm going into structured finance and my job consists of both originating and structuring the deals, and obviously the underwriting is the whole point. The sales guys handle the actual selling and pricing, but as the structurer you have to work closely with them until the deal is executed.
