Second Major in business school
Hi guys,
I will be majoring finance and I was considering the options for my second major. (It is a norm to double major in my school.) That being said, i do not really know for sure what i will do in the future upon graduation, but i was thinking of either banking, IB or whatnot, or consulting, or if luck allows it, a career that allows me to travel. Therefore, what second major would be an advantage in such fields?
Also, I was considering acturial science, but that would add on quite heavily to my workload, more so than the other majors such as corporate communication, accounting etc. It would certainly leave me little time for other things. Would this be worth it at all?
Thanks!
Why not study a language. Will certainly come in handy on your travels, and might open more doors career-wise.
Unless you are 100% set on a second major right now, do not take advice from an anonymous forum and then go running off to the Registrar's Office to proudly declare a second major... you will undoubtedly regret the hell out of that. 99.99% of college students do not actually know what they want to study or what they want to do professionally. Want/need proof of that statement? Go to an alumni event, grab a 25, 35, 45, and 55+ year old alumnus and ask them if what they are doing now is what they thought they were going to do while in their undergraduate studies. Next, ask them if they ever wished they'd studied something else. What they tell you may surprise you...
My advice (again, as this is an anonymous forum, my advice should be taken with a grain of salt) is to use the room in your schedule for electives to it's fullest potential. Take one course in each of the following subjects: Math (as in: go beyond the required level for your degree), Fine Arts (I took an acting class once... a ridiculous amount of fun and a solid GPA booster), Physics (check if there is a physical science class that isn't intended for science majors.. Astronomy was a ton of fun, I met an absolute bombshell in that class and I have no doubt that being able to point out a constellation has directly contributed to getting me laid), and a class that you pick by reading all of the course descriptions at your school and deciding it sounds the coolest (I took an introductory SCUBA course) and then decide what interests you. A second major means extra work... So make it work that you genuinely like and have an interest in (and maybe even differentiates you from other job applicants). You may even find that you don't actually want to double major, maybe you just want to supplement your current curriculum with other courses, which is ok to do.
My advice is not to go find a bunch of easy GPA boosters and Van Wilder your way through school only taking 'Physics of the Frisbee' and 'Ballroom Dancing' type classes. I didn't. I double majored (one of which was a Mathematics/Applied Mathematics/Statistics type of major which was a hell of a lot of work). However, I chose that major only after I had sampled a few higher level math classes beyond the required level. The only reason I successfully completed two majors with a good GPA was because I actually enjoyed the math despite it being a huge pain in the ass. In the process I also learned to SCUBA dive and a constellation I learned about in class (that I am almost positive I got wrong) got me laid once. Boom. College.
Why not try adding an Economics major on? Depending on the school, its not too much extra work and gives you a nice blend of theoretical and practical tools to help you in your finance studies. Employers seem to view the combo favorably whether that be for IB or consulting.
A minor in a language sounds good as well. I think a major might be overkill unless you actually want to end up in that country. Don't take actuarial science unless you want to become an actuary.
Alright, thanks for the input guys. My school does not offer a language as a minor, in fact there are no minors offered, to my knowledge. There will be chances for electives and such, however i would have to declare my major or majors by the end of my sophomore year, therefore i would have to make an informed choice by then.
Higher GPA, more time (for interesting classes in other fields, internships, ECs, sex), schedule flexibility > double major
Finance is already one of the most versatile majors coming out of college, a second major seems a bit superfluous to me unless you can optimize your schedule so you take the least possible amount of courses and still get the second major.
Let just triple majors in econ, finance and computer science, you are set for life. From banking to coding, you are golden.
Joke aside, don't just force yourself into a thing just because it may be helpful somehow. I assume that since you ask, you still have some time to shop classes around. Try different things and see what you like most. In the end, banking is not that hard technically and very learnable in the most parts.
