Series 79 and Series 63

Hi fellow monkeys,

I have a quick question. I begin working as a first-year analyst in July, and I'm set to take the SIE exam before June 1st. Do most banks provide a 6-month grace period for taking the Series 79 and 63?

Also, do people study for the 79 and 63 at the same time?

Thanks so much!

You want to study for them without overlap. Ie, study for two or three weeks and then take the exam. If you try to study for two and then take them both, you're working harder than you need to be. Your offer letter should say what the requirements are. I think you get 180 days per FINRA, but you want to knock them out early. If you work at a BB with a formal training program, you won't hit the desk right when you start, so you can use that time to study (you'll be having general investment bank wide trainings etc).

Thank you so much. Surprisingly, I didn’t get any info in my offer letter. I’m planning on using June to study for the Series 79 and then July to prepare for the Series 63. I appreciate your response!

If you’re going to a place with a formal training program don’t waste your time. The exams are pure memorization and reps so doing it months of ahead of time doesn’t do you any good. In training we had like a week or two of prep classes for the exams and they get you ready to take both. The exams are dumb and I couldn’t tell you a single thing from them, so all you need to do is pass. There’s no extra star or pat on the back for getting a high grade on it
