Should I still try to get an internship with them?

Hey guys,

I'm a sophomore majoring in Finance at a non-target in the southeast interested in investment banking and I've been constantly searching for an internship for this summer. I've been reaching out (via cold-email) to many small boutiques in my state but many of them respond saying they are either too small and don't have internship programs, or that they have already finished hiring for the summer. Today, I just got a response from a small boutique Managing Partner, after asking him about potential internship opportunities at his firm and forwarding him my resume. He said that "we aren't looking to have a summer intern..we'd just be having you perform administrative/marketing list clean up. Good luck with your search."

My question is, do you guys think I should still follow up and push to get an internship with his firm? It doesnt seem like a firm 'no', and I was thinking that maybe there's a possibility that if I do manage to get an internship at this firm, that I could make myself as useful as possible, and they may eventually let me assist on some real work. What do you guys think I should say/do?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

Yes, you absolutely should, especially if that's the only gig with a solid lead. If you impress them, you never know what could happen or if they have friends at other firms they can refer you to.

Thanks for your advice. I'm gonna try e-mailing him first thing tomorrow morning. If he doesn't respond to my follow-up email, how long do you guys think I should wait before following up again? And if I do follow up, should it be in the form of another e-mail or a phone call to him?

Best Response

Definitely follow up via email and tell him you would be thrilled and grateful for the opportunity and exposure. Respond to his email. Give him 5 business days. Then one more email. If no response to the third, then you should call the office. My uncle went to a non-target and majored in sociology. Decided to try his hand at IB and eventually landed a job with JPM. His boss ignored him for months but my uncle kept at it until the MD at JPM finally gave up and gave him a job. The point is that persistence and passion will be rewarded. by someone.

While the days of rising up to the top spot of a firm from the mailroom is mostly extinct, I think there's something to getting your foot in the door any way you can. The key here is to be able to put a name on your resume that conveys interest in finance, which will be very helpful come internship recruiting as a junior.

@"bmcrhino" That's awesome. While I'm not a sociology major, I can definitely understand part of the struggle your uncle went through being from a non-target. Given that he had two different things (non-target & non-finance) going against him and that he still persisted until success, I find that very admirable. Thanks for your specific advice and encouragement. I really needed that!
