Stretching graduation to December for one more SA shot
Hey all,
So I went through the process of applications and interviews for IB Summer analyst last year.
Despite going through the hiring process for multiple banks, and managing to get invited to Super-days with some, I ultimately did not receive an offer for the Summer.
In an attempt to still do something mildly productive and as an opportunity to be in NYC to continue networking, I accepted an opportunity to intern unpaid with a small boutique IB here in the city.
Originally, the plan was to leverage the contacts I made and strengthened this Summer, delay my graduation by declaring a minor in a subject that interested me, and work on my story and interviewing skills to apply for an IB SA role again next summer.
In essence, I planned to stretch my graduation to December of next year as opposed to graduating in the Spring.
I am now a bit concerned as I have recently received an email from my school's counseling department stating that with my minor I will be graduating in the Summer, not December. In order to stretch my graduation this far I will have to take a couple more classes.
Having said this, Do banks accept December graduates within their candidate pool for Summer opportunities? I will be somewhat of a "Rising Junior/ mid year senior"
I want to know if what I am doing works for most banks. I am assuming it should but I would appreciate some experienced insight.
(BBA major in Finance, minor in Econ)
Thanks,
Matador
Pretty interesting question, would like to see what the bankies have to say
Bump. Interested in knowing as well.
I stretched mine out a year and just applied as a junior still even though it was technically my senior year
I graduated in December. Had no impact on my ability to get a summer internship in IB.
Thanks for the responses guys. So the consensus is that I am still considered valid within the candidate pool for SA if I apply during this coming fall semester for an SA position for next Summer as a "Junior" even though I will be graduating the semester following my planned SA internship in the Fall of the same year? (2018)
Once more, thank you for the replies.
Matador
Yes, a lot of banks will note required graduation date on the application. Many will say, for example, Fall 2018 or Spring 2019.
I interned at a bank summer of last year, graduated December of last year and returned full time to that bank in July of this year.
That's the main obstacle (if you view it as one) is that most banks rotate the first year analyst in during the summer. So most likely, you'll have to wait for the summer to begin full time.
Exactly what I was hoping to hear!
Thank you for the reply.
Yea, it's not a big deal at all, trust me. Just think it through logically. Why would it matter if you graduated in December or the Spring? Like I said, 1st year's usually do not start until the following summer anyway so it's more a matter of if you are okay with having that much time off (about 6 months)
