Teacher's Private Capital

$12bn AUM, Private Equity arm of Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.

Don't know much about them but a buddy up in the Toronto area mentioned they like recruiting from the states as well.

Would love any info on them in terms of comp, prestige, ability to move to other shops after a few years here? I've heard that HSW after 2 years as an associate is a common route and that you're in a good position for the admissions process.

Comp is the biggest question here. Do PE pension arms pay dramatically less than similar AUM PE firms?

What’s It Like Working at Teachers Private Capital?

Teachers Private Capital is the PE arm of Canada’s Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. A few WSO users shared their knowledge of the group:

From WSO user @optimus_prime"

  • Base is in 80-85k range
  • Typical bonus, however, is only 30% of base and dependent on three factors with different weightings (firm performance, group performance and individual performance)
  • Have heard good things about the work environment but seems like exit opps to other (better-paying) PE shops may be limited
  • Don't know anything about the HSW angle but the gig itself is great and Teachers obviously works on some of the biggest and most notable deals so that's a plus

From Certified Investment Banking Professional @Valk"

  • You will make significantly less than a comparable AUM firm in the US
  • Even Onex, which is the top PE firm in Canada, underpays the US megafunds/top MM funds by a pretty significant amount
  • If you're doing Pension fund PE in Canada, it's not for the comp (In Canada you'd make more by staying in IBD)....its for the lifestyle/culture while still getting a chance to work on some pretty cool/impressive stuff

Also, it's a minor point, but if you're new to Toronto keep in mind that OTPP's office location is kinda out of the way (it's way up in the north end of the city and not downtown/financial district where the banks and other funds are). You'd need to live up there (which would suck), or get a car

I believe OTPP office is near Yonge and Finch so it's right next to the subway station. So you don't really need a car to get to work. Plus North York, the area in which OTPP is, is a very desirable place to live. Excellent condos at a decent price and good food options.

With base in the 80-85 range does that not mean I could very possibly make more as a 1st or 2nd year analyst at my BB? Was not expecting that significant of a pay difference between the ~200k+ range that I was expecting.

Is CPPIB PI (private investments) similar in pay?

Does anyone have any info on what type of comp one could expect at Onex as a 1st year associate?
