The Left's continued lunacy on immigration

There are so many stories from liberal cities and states that are outright refusing to comply with federal immigration law. This story from my beloved Chicago is absolutely breath taking in its scope, audacity, and lawlessness. Municipal ID cards that will be launched for illegal aliens will now be an acceptable form of ID for voting in Chicago. Huh? Is it just me, or does U.S. citizenship no longer matter with respect to voting? Silly me; I actually believe in the Constitution.

Ah, another idiot who doesn't have the reading comprehension of a five year old.

First off, there is no requirement under Illinois State Law that requires a potential voter to prove their legal ability to vote; they only have to attest to it, so fail one for you. As the article itself points out, nothing stops anyone from getting a fake ID right now.

Second, as the article also explicitly points out, there is most definitely a requirement to qualify for these cards. So another fail for what passes for critical thinking in your head.

And third, and most importantly, "the Left" as you attempt to deride it, believes that it's better to err on the side of caution when crafting voter ID laws. Depriving one legal citizen of their vote is far worse than allowing 100 non-citizens to vote. After all, what's the worst that happens in the latter case? A bunch of people living in the US and contributing to it's society get a say in how it functions? Dearie me, what a catastrophe. Contrast that with the US's long history of disenfranchising people of color, and you can further see why liberals are more concerned that blacks and hispanics get to vote - the very same older white rural Southern population that is attempting to institute strict Voter ID laws are the same constituents that used the same exact tactics to impose Jim Crow.

Good God. That is not what "the left" believes. The argument against voter ID is that we don't have hundreds of illegals voting, and that claim is just fear-mongering in order to enact a system that disenfranchises legal citizens who don't have the means or wherewithal to obtain the ID. If you were speaking for the left, they would have lost that debate long ago.

This is the fact of the matter. But it isn't the philosophy underlying the debate itself.

Voter ID laws are a way to restrict legal citizens from voting in such a way that certain blocs wield outsized political influence. The cover story for this is that it prevents non-citizens from voting. Whether or not there are ten or ten million illegals trying to vote is immaterial; voter ID laws in this country are meant to restrict American citizens of color from exercising their Constitutional right to vote. Any other explanation given, while potentially true, is just the proverbial lipstick on a pig.

We had well over a hundred years of evidence for this in the form of Jim Crow.

If republicans start voting multiple times you can guarantee Democrats will start demanding ID cards.

What’s sad is ever illegal vote negates a citizens vote. But who cares about actual Americans.

Trump should have ICE agents stationed outside these ID centers. Just start scooping up people left and right.

Is there any evidence that there is a measurable contingent of illegals that are voting? I haven't seen it and, intuitively, it is unlikely. Illegals are generally poor minorities, we can't even get poor minorities who are citizens to vote much less illegals. This is another non-story garbage lie perpetuated by the right. Voter ID laws are just a way to make it even harder to vote when the United States is already restrictive compared to our peer democracies (some which don't even require an ID to vote). Bonus points to Republicans because poor minorities are the ones most negatively affected by these laws. It is clear that the Republican party knows its policies are unpopular. Between egregious gerrymandering (Republicans just lost in court in Pennsylvania for this and I expect more losses to come) and voter suppression they've said fuck trying to convince the country of our policies, instead, we'll manipulate the system to shove unpopular policies down the throat of every citizen.

Well considering the states fight the fed when they try and study this issue, we don’t know.

Your core train of thought it wrong, as always.

If the US had functioning immigration rules, I wouldn’t care so much about voter ID laws. But we have millions of illegal immigrants in this country and if a small fraction of them vote in any election, it is an issue.

Forget the countless citizens killed by illegals, or the jobs taken or the government resources used.

So let me get this right. Because non-citizens are not politically engaged and because we don't have millions of illegals voting (we'll never know the exact number), we shouldn't require voter ID to verify the voter's identity.

There is an argument to be made that some Americans are so poor that they can't afford the modest fee for a voter ID. And I do support free national ID for those people. But to say that voter ID in general is somehow a racist mechanism is absurd. Disparate impact is not the same as outright discrimination.

As a society, we use ID for a lot of activities. Why not for voting?

According to wikipedia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Israel, Holland, Norway, Switzerland and the UK all require an official ID to vote (and I know France and Japan do as well). After a quick google search, it seems that the only developed country that doesn't is Australia and voting there is mandatory. So your statement is an absolute lie. This is why it's so hard to have an intelligent debate with people in this environment.

I am receptive to the argument that voters ID laws do have an impact on minority voting patterns, but the fact is, the US is an outlier amongst democracy in not requiring an official ID to vote and arguing otherwise is just pure intellectual dishonesty.

There were four total documented cases of attempted voter fraud in the 2016 election, including one woman who voted for Trump twice. This, despite the GOP's repeated claim that we have a widespread voter fraud problem in this country, Kris Kobach's now suspended voter suppression effort, and Blob the Builder's baseless claim that millions voted illegally or were bussed into neighboring states causing him to lose the popular vote. This is just another fear-based racist dog whistle-forming policy by the GOP who is too scared to compete in a fair and free election nowadays. Laughable.

As a radical moderate, I'm not opposed to a stricter form of voter ID, so long as it comes with extended early voting and other provisions making voting as easy as possible for all citizens. I don't believe the GOP has any interest in the latter reform.

"I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people."
