Undergraduate-UCONN
Hello all,
The questions I am asking here may seem stupid because I am a noob. #Don't judge. I am just kidding. Anyway, I am a sophomore in college trying to break into investment banking, more specifically an internship in NYC. I attend the University of Connecticut Stamford campus, which is not a non-target school. I have started the networking process, and have a couple of good contacts. I have applied online to many places such as BOA and GS, but have not heard back from either of them. Is this just me being a overanxious because I have not hear anything for a couple of weeks, or if there is something that I could be doing to help this process that I am not doing. How do I show these people that I am not just doing it for the money, that I want to do because I enjoy it and I want to learn from them. Are there things I can do besides applying online, networking and attending career fairs? It just seems like what i am doing right now is not enough. Also, thoughts on working in IB vs HF, I am leaning towards the former but want to know differences between the two in terms of work, compensation, and the like. Lastly, when applying online, I guess the best search term would be "summer analyst investment banking"? Or is there something else that would narrow the search down a bit more?
Thank you very much.
NK
This is just a sample "I attend the University of Connecticut Stamford campus, which is not a non-target school." Please proofread your writing before publishing. Having said that, network every chance you get. It is not easy to get into an IB or HF from a non-target school, however, it is doable. Good luck!
yeah whoops I guess that would be a good idea especially for a resume. I think if I had written a little earlier than 1:00 those mistakes would not be there. Sorry about that.
Talk to people on-campus. I'm sure there's a least one person who has done it at your school or reach out to alums who have.
Do your research on the forum and see how people with similar backgrounds have made it. IB isn't the "holy grail" thing to do, but being motivated is going to help you get some job that's good.
Thank you! I don't think I would do IB for the holy grail part, I would do it because I like it. But thanks for the advice. It is appreciated.
I like it. Drink the kool-aid until you burn out 6 months into being a FT analyst.
Look up “University of Connecticut [Insert Bank Name]” on LinkedIn and you’ll get some good hits. Try to go through friends of friends to get an introduction.
Thank you! that is very helpful.
UConn any street cred? (Originally Posted: 08/06/2006)
I am graduating from the University of Connecticut in May 2007 and looking to pursue investment banking as an analyst.
Can anyone clue me in to any sentiment that exists towards UConn or public schools in general?
I have 3.73 GPA, 1430 SAT, extensive extra curriculars and internships with GE and Pratt & Whitney (quantitative skills developed in all three). My most recent poisition with GE was a marketing analyst role, so I am going to market those skills...Any tips?
I'd like to know this too, I might attend UCONN if NYU falls through.
no
hell no
heck no
Anyone have any input more constructive than zxcvbn's?
You can start by listing all the IB firms you are interested. Then get your cover letter and resume review review and review. After making sure everything is good then apply online and also if you can find out if they are offering any information session either outside or in your school. also if you have any friends or relative that is working in IB call them up have them help you or something.
i heard they have a good basketball team
Incoming freshmen At UConn with aspirations of making it to the street (Originally Posted: 08/12/2014)
So I figured I'd introduce myself. In about two weeks I start school at UConn in the undecided program. Over the past year I've become interested in the markets and how it all works and interacts which has led me to focus on pursuing a degree in Finance.
I understand their's a discussion of whether going to a target school is critical to my success, but as I have already stated I'm going to UConn. So not a target school, but I've done some digging and found that a few UConn grads have made it to the street so I' don't feel as hopeless about my prospects as I did while reading some of the posts on this site.
What I'd like to learn from the WSO community is what things I should watch out for as far as school goes and getting internship/jobs. I'm willing to work very hard towards this goal of mine, and (hopefully not coming off as snobby) I'd say my achievements grade-wise in high school (4.3 GPA) bode well for my success in college.
It would be great if you all might give me some suggestions, leave links to good posts, or maybe even tell your story of how you got to where you are now because I could honestly use some guidance right now.
Thanks for welcoming me into the community, -Fahrverguegen
Why are you going to Uconn if you have a 4.3
Money. I couldn't afford any of the other schools I got into. Also that gpa was the one my high school calculated and colleges might calculate differently.
