What's the modern definition of "smart casual"?

Some changes are afoot at my firm. I was told by my bosses that, while we do not have an official dress code, "smart casual" is preferred for senior people. However, I am not sure what it constitutes these days, especially in an all-quant fund.

Most people dress like trash. So I’d assume smart casual is some form of khaki and an ill fitting dress shirt combined with a non descriptive blazer.

Watch how your bosses dress and mirror.

just dress like rivers cuomo from weezer, have a huge ego, pay too much for coffee, and have an air of superiority over your contemporaries.

in all seriousness, I'd just go conservative. I view business casual as basically a suit with no tie, but smart casual to me means you can have more fun with shirt patterns, pant material, socks & shoes. patterned buttondown, no tie, well fitting pants (like this https://bonobos.com/products/weekday-warrior-dress-pants?color=friday%2…), and a brogue shoe or bit loafers.

you want examples of smart casual? think satya nadella, tim cook & sundar pichai, not mark zuckerberg

Probably the simplest approach would be wear a suit. I have not done it since 2005, but I can adjust.
I have a friend who lives in the country, and it's supposed to be an hour from 42nd Street. A lie! The only thing that's an hour from 42nd Street is 43rd Street!

If you can afford an entirely new wardrobe, dress like a studio exec or talent agent in Hollywood. Seriously. No matter what they call it, there’s nothing casual about the look just because you’re not wearing a tie and lace up black shoes. The guy you’re meeting with is dressed like he’s about to go watch his kids play soccer. Then you realize his polo shirt probably costs $400.

Whatever they wear in Silicon Valley, don’t. Techies are fugitives from the fashion police and deserve to be shot on sight.

Did someone say to wear a suit with no tie for smart casual? Wow are they off base.

Having previously worked in a place that was "smart casual" - jeans are almost always worn. Jeans and a tucked in polo with loafers, khakis and a polo, **basically business casual but with the flexibility of wearing jeans and/or polos. **That's how it was done at my last firm.

Go to a local store and ask. Smart casual keeps the product cranking.

But since you asked here..... Just look sharp and fitted. Wear a shirt with a collar, slacks, bring a jacket. The look matters, but mostly no one will care as long as it doesn't look like you walked away from a 19th hole bogey.

Women in attendance at the one event defined as sharp casual i've been to were mostly wearing black dresses, various knee lengths.
