Where in Operations is Best?

Hey everyone,

I've been reading this board for a while, and I think you all are really knowledgeable. I was hoping someone could give me some advice.

I accepted an internship offer to be a SA within operations. I know a lot of you aren't big fans of ops, but I'm not nearly as ambitious as a lot of you. I come from a nontarget public school, although my grades and involvement are both pretty good. My goal is to work 50- 60 hours a week, and make about 100k by the time I am like 30 or so. Do you think I can do that in ops? I was also wondering where in ops you would recommended. I was told I can request something. I thought Treasury and Trade Services, IT Risk Management, Securities and Fund Services, Middle Office, or Securities and Private Banking Operations would be good. I could also request Global Operations and Reporting.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice.

Your dream is to make 100k by 30? You have shitty dreams. You need to be more creative and ambitious. You only have one life.

Because when you're in a room full of smart people, smart suddenly doesn't matter—interesting is what matters.

my friend, quite an obnoxious statement from you. you dont know anything about him. so easy on the personal attacks. if you dont have any advice to offer him, lay low

It's not a personal attack. He's still young and I'm just saying don't pigeon hole yourself because (according to him, he isn't ambitious). If he really tried he can do almost whatever he wants. That's all I was saying.

It doesn't seem he has much a passion for it since he doesn't really care where he ends up in ops. It's super depressing to be 30 and find out that you wasted 10 years of your life doing something you don't like.

I'll clarify my "not ambitious" comment. I am ambitious, I'm just not motivated by 100 hour weeks. I want to be reasonably wealthy and successful at what I do. I just also want to be able to maintain my volunteerism and activities outside of the office.

I hope I do find something I really enjoy in ops, or potentially elsewhere. I just don't want to be forced into a role where I feel like I'm not excelling or is a "dead end" position. I would like to end up somewhere that I can work really hard for 50-60 hours a week, make decent money, and still enjoy life outside of the office.

I'd love to be involved with something that involves strategy somehow. I think one of my biggest issues is I am unfamiliar with many of the different functions and departments in operations. Would anybody be able to link me to a resource on that?

Sorry for all the questions and thank you for your help.

so, as for your comment about not wanting to be forced into a role etc, from the people i have spoken to in ops, this is quite common. you may not think your self as motivated, but that statement shows there's more to you just wanting to go to work. Granted the only people i spoke to in ops are on trade support, but a lot of them felt they were pigeon holed, and while they did make decent money 1 yr out (60-70k) its not what they wanted from a job.

But you can def make a solid living in ops if you want. theres a lot of diff sides to the business. pm me if youd like

I tried to pm you, but unfortunately I don't think it went through due to my lack of points. Do you think you can pm me? Thank you.

@ricky: A lot of people don't consider work their life priority; nor money, nor ambition/prestige.

If you are 30 and making 100k you'll still be earning more than most families in America. You don't have to make millions to be ambitious either.

That's the thing. I wasn't even referring to money when I said be ambitious. I was referring to doing something you love or something that takes balls. An adventure, as cheesy as that may sound. If you are happy with progressing in ops and being able to do your thing after hours then perfect! Just don't do it because you don't think you can do anything else :)
