why do bankers over use dashes in emails
Almost every email send by bankers have dashes in them and they're used incorrectly almost 90% of the time. What's the obsession with dashes lol

Say that to their face.
have an example?
No idea--could you provide an example?
Do you mean:

Great comment - keep up the good work.-Android
Dashes have more prestige than commas but are less pretentious than colons.
Said right after I used a colon the line above
no idea why this is marked as funny - it's true
I started using dashes in my everyday - i love it
This is such an accurate comment, its a nice middle ground.
Real question is: which one is more prestigious - single dash or double dash?
It's all about this one – the elongated dash.
wb this one 8=>
It's called an em dash.
Nobody at my bank seems to know the difference between a dash, en dash or em dash.
To not obfuscate people I'm forced to use dashes when I just want to flex on them with em dashes—such a shame.
found the liberal arts major...

What about when they use exclamation marks?
Wait liberal arts background here. Isn't it generally agreed upon that the em dash is generally known to NOT have a particular correct usage? As long as it sets off an unessential modifier and the rest of the sentence is able to standalone, the em dash is considered fine.
But I agree. The em dash is vastly overused.
You're totally right. Was waiting for someone to say this. As long as everything before it is a legitimate sentence, anything goes for after the em dash.
Dawg - gotta utilize those dashes - easier than using proper grammar. Not even being sarcastic.
Finance major here - I like them in networking emails instead of using periods so I feel better about having less sentences.
If I use a period every time then bankers will see 6-7 sentences instead of 3-4 lol.
This is some autistic reasoning. You think anyone actually cares about 3 vs 6 sentences...
I get a 60-70% response rate to first-time cold emails (non-alumni) so I’m doing something right. There’s a lot of psychology that goes into written communication and small changes like the number of sentences in an email can really improve your hit rate - whether it makes sense objectively or not. You should consider using less offensive adjectives.
After reading this, I processed it and it sorta makes sense tbh
Double dash is way better
Let's ask Patrick Curtis.
What is your obsession with Patrick Curtis.
He's banned several of my previous accounts.
I've actually never seen the double dash - but I do use the single often
big dash guy here
edit: the dashing doesn't stop in PE dawgs
BIG DASH ENERGY
When there's a grammatical error in your post about grammatical errors.
But really - I use a dash when I have no idea what kind of punctuation to use. Double dash is way too aggressive
This is still a lot less annoying than boomers who incorrectly overuse ellipsis/trailing dots. When I first started working, I got an email from my director that looked like this:
"Hey {insert first name} ...
Thx... Great work on this ... let's circle together on this tomorrow morning..."
I thought he was being passive aggressive and hated the work I did and hated my guts because of all the ellipsis. Slowly realized the dude had no idea how to use punctuation
not sure— I enjoy using dashes to break up text to have it read in a similar cadence to how I’d speak. Dash carries a different meaning than comma though. you don’t use a dash without two separate ideas. I’ve used this for years in personal conversations before finance though

Dashes=Chad move Commas=virgin move
Shut up you betamax
We don't over use dashes - that's preposterous.
Ye agreed - it's way too pretentious.
Because most bankers don’t know basic grammar or are too lazy to use it. “Pls fix thx”
It's easier to break up thoughts and points with dashes rather than have to structure it into sentences. Makes it less formal.
