Dashes have more prestige than commas but are less pretentious than colons.

To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.

Real question is: which one is more prestigious - single dash or double dash?

Nobody at my bank seems to know the difference between a dash, en dash or em dash.

To not obfuscate people I'm forced to use dashes when I just want to flex on them with em dashes—such a shame.

Target Sophomore – Thanks for the note, happy to chat about my time at BB. Let's connect next week – shoot me some times when you can hop on the phone.

You forget to mention the email they send when they miss ur call.

Target Student -

Apologies for missing your call - last week got a little hectic.

Send me over some times for next week.

Dawg - gotta utilize those dashes - easier than using proper grammar. Not even being sarcastic.

I come from down in the valley, where mister when you're young, they bring you up to do like your daddy done

I get a 60-70% response rate to first-time cold emails (non-alumni) so I’m doing something right. There’s a lot of psychology that goes into written communication and small changes like the number of sentences in an email can really improve your hit rate - whether it makes sense objectively or not. You should consider using less offensive adjectives.

"Prospect in IB-M&A" Finance major here - I like them in networking emails instead of using periods so I feel better about having less sentences.

If I use a period every time then bankers will see 6-7 sentences instead of 3-4 lol.

After reading this, I processed it and it sorta makes sense tbh

When there's a grammatical error in your post about grammatical errors.

But really - I use a dash when I have no idea what kind of punctuation to use. Double dash is way too aggressive

This is still a lot less annoying than boomers who incorrectly overuse ellipsis/trailing dots. When I first started working, I got an email from my director that looked like this:

"Hey {insert first name} ...

Thx... Great work on this ... let's circle together on this tomorrow morning..."

I thought he was being passive aggressive and hated the work I did and hated my guts because of all the ellipsis. Slowly realized the dude had no idea how to use punctuation

not sure— I enjoy using dashes to break up text to have it read in a similar cadence to how I’d speak. Dash carries a different meaning than comma though. you don’t use a dash without two separate ideas. I’ve used this for years in personal conversations before finance though

Because most bankers don’t know basic grammar or are too lazy to use it. “Pls fix thx”
