Might want to differentiate between retained, contingency, and mixed firms. I'd also throw in pinellc.com.
thank you for the suggestion. how would you classify contingency vs. retained and what do you consider to be the main pros/cons from a candidate's perspective?
This is very helpful. Thanks
I would add the following:
McKibben Group ([email protected]). I never used it and not sure whether it has a website, but it got some of my coworkers jobs / interviews at MM PE shops.
Broadreach Group, http://www.broadreachgrp.com/ (hedge fund focus)
And actually I just got an email from this new exec search firm (I recoginized that one person used to work at SG): www.amitysearchpartners.com
there was a round of cuts but looks like i survived for the time being. still i think this database is a useful exercise. i just added the PEInsider database to it so now we're up to ~60 search firms for which PE is at least a significant practice area.
they are certainly the 300lb gorilla for general executive search ... but do you know how much they focus on PE?
Spinner are you going to post a list that segments these out a bit; that would be most appreciated if you have that info. Then people could comment on that list too to really refine it. Also BSD Associates is probably bogus, there's not even a phone number and the site seems like bullshit. Probably just trying to get kids' resumes.
I just found this:
www.peinsider.com/ranks.php?rid=47
I don't know how accurate it is, but I thought it may help.
What's the best way to get one's resume in front of these guys?
good work spinner! this is a great resource to folks like me who are trying to transition into PE from Consulting. any online resources that you believe would be helpful to me? appreciate it!
I just posted another topic with a similar title but slightly different question. Of the recruiters that are listed here, does anyone know which ones place Operating Partners (as opposed to Associate, VP, etc)?
spinner, this is great, thanks for posting.
Thanks for sharing this list with us...It surly help
I would add JM Search on the retained side as they specialize in C-level searches for PE backed middle-market companies. They also just opened their NY office. Would say the guys did an exceptional job on both searches for us (COO and CEO).
Should have provided some contact details:
contact either Steve Baumruk or Gog Boonswang for Private Equity related search work

Chicago private equity recruiters (Originally Posted: 10/14/2014)
Does anyone have a consolidated list of recruiters that have a strong presence/network in Chicago? I've tried the search function but the data is stale, or few people seem to have any solid leads. Any help would be much appreciated - feel free to PM me as well if you wouldn't like the information to be widespread.
Also interested.
At least for the larger funds: Last I checked, Dynamics ran the Vista and GTCR processes and CPI worked with MDP.
Get your resume into the PEAC book, as a lot of them use that, sometimes in conjunction with a recruiter(s).
Chicago also has a fair amount of "word of mouth" recruiting. Usually the way this happens is someone from the PE firm will reach out to a senior banker and ask for the resumes of interested analysts.
There are also a lot of smaller recruiting firms that had some Chicago openings, so don't neglect those.
I also got a couple interviews by networking, but found this to be somewhat more difficult than it was in banking (fewer openings, more competitive, different recruiting timelines/structures for different firms, etc.)

Thank you in advance!

I'm sure I'm missing some, but those are most of the big ones. GoBuyside.com has some postings as well.
Wonderful thank you sir
This list is awesome - Given that it's a little dated now any updates to the list?
Great List! Would love to know more.
