Would drinking a shot of vodka before interviews help me relax?

I am an underclassman, and I have interviews this week with major investment banks.
I get quite nervous during interviews. How do I keep myself calm? Someone
suggested that I have a shot of vodka. But this advice comes no other than a
huge frat guy I know around on campus.
What's your take?

Why just one shot. You should probably get s*** wasted. Seriously, by the time you have enough to really calm your neres (beyond placebo effect) it'll probably be doing a little work on your judgement too. Not a brilliant idea. On the other hand, i'm not much of a drinker so....

dude, that's retarded.  that's the dumbest thing you could do.  not only would they most likely smell it on your breath, which would kill any chances of being taken serously, you would destroy your school's reputation with that bank and potentially others.  if the interviewers leaked this to your career center, you would be in some deep sh*t.  not only would you never be able to secure an interview via your school's services, you might also be disciplined otherwise.

If you don't want to be nervous, I seriously suggest popping a xanax or something of that type. It won't smell and it'll do the job. Valium works as well as somone already mentioned. Ofcourse, getting your hands on this stuff might be slightly difficult but work on it and it'll happen.

Yea do something to relax - and don't do any yay or adderall since your legs will be shaking like no other hah.

Try to maintain the best body language possible - this is often overlooked since you can't really see yourself. Try to be open and use your hands or something. Worked well for me so far.

Pre-interview anxiety is completely normal but if you are suffering from severe anxiety you should probably consult a doctor.  I would advise against taking any type of drug or alcohol prior to the interview because you would be merely masking a significant underlying problem.  Finance related jobs are generally highly stressful and you must develop healthy coping methods if you expect to become successful.

Preparedness will certainly alleviate some of the stress causing stimuli so I would suggest you start studying.  Also, a lot of the anxiety that you feel is self-imposed and if you are able to approach the situation from the perspective that the interview is fairly insignificant in the realm of all things you should be ok.

Good luck.

Marijuana, light up a fat spliff, lay back and get ready to smoke that interview dude.

More seriously stay away from alcohol and drugs, period. (Marijuana is a drug by the way, no matter what they say in "half baked", plus you are not in high school anymore.)

As a side note- are ANY of you guys on this thread in college/the real world? All this talk about them smelling it on your breath... one shot and a stick of gum, it's not like he's pouring it on his clothes, rubbing it in his face and then pounding a bottle till it seeps out his pores.

Seriously yeah doing a shot before interviews = bad, but not because they'll "smell it on your breath."

i say snort some peyote and swallow some shrooms, but thats just my $.02

------ "its the running joke now, we now have fair trade with china so they send us poisoned sea food and we send them fraudulent securities."

haha this is hilarious. yes, jack off while listening to music that will pump you up, take a few shots of yager bomb, down a few prescription pills in the mix, and you're ready to rock that interview!

Even if the shot does help you, if you get stressed out on a regular basis how are you going to survive on the job?  Be drunk constantly?  I've had days where 5-10 different people are all asking for different things from me at once and yelling at me for not finishing first.  The actual job is way more stressful than interviews.

You should do some practice interviews if that's what it takes to calm yourself.  No point in using drugs because they are not likely to help much in the first place.

ideating...i dont see what the comments about them smelling it on his breath has anything to do with not being in the real world, if that is what you meant.  i've obviously drank before, as have my friends.....and i know for a fact that you can smell it on someone's breath when they are 3 feet away from you.  especially when all you do is listen to them talk for 30+ minutes.  yeah, he's not taking a grey goose bath, but it's vodka, not a wine cooler.  slightly stronger.

Get laid or masturbate. It'll relax you and make you feel good. Or listen to really corny music.

i hope this is a joke, but if you really need to take something before an interview and are scared of the smell then take half of a bottle cap of ghb. That will make you RELAX. Just don't take too much. If you can't get ghb, make it yourself. All you need is paint thinner or floorcleaner depending on what you think tastes better.

Even better... fuck the interviewers up by giving em drugs like the scene in the movie "orange county", when he talks to the admission counselor while the counslor was high as a kite.

Better off, do 3 lines of coke it would boost your confidence

Success of this strategy depends upon a couple of things . . .

1) How well you actually know your stuff (i.e. don't need to think critically, but just rattle your pitch/answers off)

2) How well you hold your alcohol and can cover up the smell

3) How nervous you really get (i.e. are you likely to panic and blow the whole thing w/out alcohol)

I had comprehensive oral exams for my history degreee as an undergrad and took a shot of vodka before I went in.  I was much more relaxed and didn't flinch at throwing all kinds of BS out there.  Then again I was pretty much an alcoholic frat boy at that point, so a shot of vodka may have just put me back in the state I was used to functioning in.

My comment was the one suggesting popping a few valiums and chasing it with a line of yay.

But even if all I did was say "take the shot" I still think it'd be ridiculous. Especially for an interview.

F9 - Update:

I don't think people took it as a joke because, well, in my opinion, it seems very realistic. A lot of people who feel uncomfortable in an interview consider alcohol to lighten up their mood. I think it is a common thought for some socially awkward people, but few actually go through with it.

I agree with MAdude, if you're a lightweight then clearly this is a bad idea since you may start spilling out stupid shit in the interview. But if you can hold your own drinking wise then you should be fine. But I would worry about going down this slippery slope. At this rate, you would be an alchoholic by your second year of investment banking.

Before you go to the interview, youtube "just for laugh" videos.. they are funny as hell... no matter what mood you are in.. you would certainly loosen you up.. then when you go to the interview.. flashback to these videos..

Let's be realistic here. If you can't handle interviews, how are you going to handle working with people 20 years your senior? Like many others here have said, you can't drink on the job to ease your nervousness.

Some people just aren't cut out the job. Banking is very interactive, so get used to it or consider other options.

Dude, you are interviewing with other human beings...not robots or aliens!

Cheer up, be natural, confident and don't lie...

If drinking, smoking are just a way to escape your nervousness I would suggest to try something called "studying" it's healthier and guess what? it works.

When you feel ready about Accounting and Valuation, read the WSJ of the day, take a shower (jerk off) and then Bam!

> Be positive, confident and it will work...and then you will drink Vodka to celebrate with your sign in bonus...This one tastes better.
