07 Analyst Attire: Suits
I'm sure many of us are going to be rounding out our wardrobe in the coming months. Let's begin by discussing suits.
What do you think are the basic suits an Analyst must have? I'm leaning towards solid navy, navy pinstripe, charcoal gray, and a black or black pinstripe.
How much money are you going to spend? Are you going to buy four great suits? One blue chip and 3 bargains? Or save the money for booze since your client contact is minimal?
Unless you work at Lehman, you won't be needing 4 suits for your summer gig.
I did just fine with 1 nice suit and 1 JosABank.
Sorry, should have made it clear I meant full-time not summer.
Dress code at my bank is business casual so I'm gonna settle for 2 suits. Black and Solid navy.
I have two suits that are good, but not great. I don't think I need to buy another suit, considering that I won't wear suits too often. However, I plan on buying more shirts and trousers. Does anyone know good trouser brands?
Get it tailored man, noone buys formal clothes off the rack.
you should NEVER wear a black suit.
I really don't like Dan Bush but he is 100% correct. I dont care if it has stripes, windowpanes, or pictures of asian prostitutes, you never ever ever ever wear a black suit. I am not quite sure why every fag at my bschool feels the necessity to wear a black suit, but that is the absolute worst idea ever. Stick with charcoal or navy.
I don't want to spend too much money on pants, so I need to buy them off the rack. Any good brands?
Why not black suits? Does the same rule apply to interviews as well? I thought a junior guy would be expected to wear black because it seems like a conservative color. Can someone please give me detailed explanation. Is there is some sort of logic behind this?
Black is for funerals and the like. Charcoal gray and navy are proper conservative and classic suit colors.
is it not proper attire for interviews?
i would not say its absolutely not allowed but darker gray would be prefered
so does anybody kn ow why no black suits, or did you just hear somebody else say that? I mean I'm sure your right... I just dont get it
black is just too formal, and you'll look like an idiot. that's about it.
Unless you want to be confused with the waiter at the cocktailparty...
"black tie" doesn't refer only to the color of the tie...
black is too formal
and all I have is a black suit. I was not aware that black was so inappropriate. So should I buy a new suit? Or is it okay to wear black for a interview?
I was getting a little paranoid

it doesn't only apply to banking. black suits have always been inappropriate for business attire. you will never see an MD wear a black suit to work. if you notice anyone in a senior position, they are most likely wearing navy.
i interned at lehman and the only people i saw wearing black suits this summer were idiot analysts with no idea how to dress.
What about a bright red "pimp" suit ? Will that be looked down upon ?
As long as crushed velvet is in the mix you should be fine
Brooks Brothers stopped making black suits right after Lincoln was assissinated b/c Lincoln was wearing a black suit. Even ignoring that, the help wears black, and the customers wear navy or charcoal, unless you are at a semi-formal even, where you can wear black tie, or formal event, where you wear white tie.
Any good trouser brands? or should I just go commando?
You cannot get a decent suit under $500.
are you all models or bankers?
I don't know why no black, but I too have heard this from people in the banking industry. I went with a gray pinstripe for my interview, but I don't think they really care what color suit you are wearing as long as you represent yourself correctly.
Traditionally black is too formal. It makes you look out of place. It should be reserved only for very formal occasions. In order to dress down the all black, a loud shirt is typically necessary which will definitely stick out like a sore thumb at a BB
my suit is black but has a lot of thin brown pin stripes, kinda making the suit look dark brown. is this acceptable?
