Guy I know got into HBS

He's been out of undergrad for five years and starting out doing back office in Philly at some F500 and was most recently a "marketing rep" for a F500 in the Midwest.

Is it really *that* hard to get into a t6/t5 b-school?

I've never applied to bs,

I've never applied to bs, but I know if you come from the midwest, your competition from a geographic standpoint is substantially lower than say NYC. I know of a certain bank out here that would be considered less than mediocre, but they do a pretty good job of getting their analysts into M7 schools (primarily HBS and Wharton though).

It certainly is tough, but

It certainly is tough, but if you meet a certain generally accepted level of criterion you should get into at least one top 7 MBA program.

- GPA: 3.5 from any respected school (say top 50 U.S. News for simplicity sake)
- GMAT: Minimum 700
- Work Experience: 2-3 years for really intense jobs (PE, HF, certain groups in IB) or 5 years for decent job (PWM, Corp. Finance at F500, Big 4)
- Some level of extracurricular involvement

If you can describe your leadership skills gained through your work experience (promotions, raises, increasing responsibility in a managerial role) and write good essays, you will have as good a chance as anyone for a top 5-7 MBA program.

Congrats

Congrats to your friend. Perhaps I'm too optimistic here, but I think that given that so many people here are driven, competitive both with their work and their studies, and tend to start asking about things like business school in their freshman summers, when most kids think, "pool", etc., there must be a good number of forum-goers here that either were accepted at, or ar capable of getting into a top 10 school.

Big4?

Is this considered industry standard that 5 years in the public accounting sector can land you in a top 5 MBA program, given all the others are there? (gmat, gpa)
