What was the watch Terrance gave Ari on entourage? The episode where Allen what's his face dies and Ari gets offered the head of the studio gig?
I think it was an AP.
Any list that doesn't include Jaeger LeCoultre is highly flawed. Their Gyrotourbillon is the most beautiful and intricate movement I've ever seen.
Wow, I clicked the link, and it places Rolex above Jaeger. This list was compiled by a bunch of morons.
Stringer, Its an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, a nice watch and a discrete one among those who don't know watches (unless of course it's gold like the one on the show) Ari also wears a stainless version
My watch costs nothing, is invisible, and helps me meet people and make friends at parties!
"Hey buddy, got the time?"
All rankings of watches are ridiculous, its like ranking fashion brands. There is an overall consensus that PP/AP/VC is the three top brands with PP being in its own league.
To everythingsucks,
Hey Buddy, why do u think Jaege shoud be above Rolex?
I guess different people have different perspectives, mostly on emotional side, but what matters most is the ranking methodology, isn't it?
according to those who published the rankings at watchesranking.com, " The rankings are compiled based on five key indicators of quality: Price, Art, Reliability, Investment value and Search engine citation. Scores for each indicator are weighted as shown to arrive at a final overall score.
I guess Rolex have much higher score than Jaeger-LeCoultre in terms of public recognition among search engines and watch magazines. Besides, Rolex is widely known for its investment value. Rolex does excel in these two indicators, which definitely boosts Rolex's ranking among Luxury watch rankings.
Here comes Rolex! Rolex ranks #2 in Luxury watch category with an overall score of 87.1 and an average price of $13,172

I'm a big fan of Rolex, wearing Submariner for 10 years, just love it! my wife has a Cartier tank. kind of funning to rank these brands. which one is better? Cartier or Rolex, I can hardly tell...
Zenith chronomaster t open. Beautiful watch. It was a gift from my grandparents. (I think it costs around 7K)
As for your actual question of which watch I wear, that would be Tissot. I wear the Zenith on very special occasions only. (I've only worn it once since I got it 2 years ago.
PATEK is much better than blancpain. blancpain is just a shitty brand who maks expensive watches. my mother had one and it sucked
fossil
Can't argue with Patek at 1 but AP is number 2 without question. You also have to include JLC and Rolex in the mix as well.
Disagree with Blancpain as #2. Feel like A. Lange & Sohne should be at 2 or 3, or at the very least top 5 - not 6.
Yep, A. Lange & sonhe should be top 3 if we re basing our rankings on craftmanship, prestige, and reliability
MB&F, anyone?
I love BLANCPAIN wristwatches. Well diserved second place.
PP, AP, VC, ALS, Piaget
i thought gucci was the top most luxury watch brand
This ranking blows
FP Journe should have made the top ten along with JLC (their reverso is such a historic time piece)
take out ulysse nardin and Piaget
The lack of Rolex in this ranking is cause for concern as well
1) Casio 2) Seiko 3) Casiq
Let's face it. If the watch you like or own isn't where you think it should be in the ranking, your not going to like it.
Love Blancpain watches, very attractive and also very reliable. My husband has had one for 40 years and is still as good as the day he was given it by his father. As I've always admired it, he decided to buy me a vintage one (I collect vintage watches), so now I'm the proud owner of a beautiful gold Art Deco Blancpain and couldn't be happier!

Any suggestions on a nice watch that is in the price range of $500-600? I'd like to get a nice watch before I start this summer, but I'm not looking to drop an obscene amount of money on one, as I could use that money for more important things (rent, food, booze, etc.).
I'm pretty simple. I like an average-sized face, probably black, stainless steel band, and I'm not generally a fan of much going on on the face. All ideas are welcome, thanks!
Had the same issue as you. I had a couple of watches but didn't think Diesel was a good match for Ibanking. With somewhat limited resources, i acquired this from Saks but I think they're out now so here's another link:
http://www.bluenile.com/tx-technoluxury-watch-mens_8297
Ew.
You PAID for this watch? Wow.
Here is a timeless classic:
TAG HEUER
wow i must say youngmoney, one of the ugliest watches ive seen. thank god for the winter summer dial though !
were you offended by my comment regarding Florida in the other thread and was that your comeback? You should maybe read why that dial is there and realize that the watch tells you the time in each timezone and automatically adjusts for solstice and hemisphere. But I'm sure your Dora the explorer timepiece is much more sophisticated. Goooooo Gators!
ebel
youngmoney, cool looking watch. Too much on the face for me, but I like it better than most.
Edmundo, perfect. Do you think that would come with with a black face and a stainless steel band? It's exactly what I'm looking for. Simple, elegant, and classy.
This might be closer to what you're looking for, and it's excellent for fighting crime:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/410x2KgYXvL.SL500_AA280.jpg
For some reason the face looks a bit small, like it belongs on the wrist of a 12 or 13 year old. Other than that, absolutely perfect. Thanks!
Try Certina, old swiss brand. They have some watches in that price range, and some more expensive. My personal fav:
http://www.certina.com/Collection/Gents/SPORT-Classic/DS-Podium.aspx
Really like some of their watches, but after a quick search, it doesn't seem as though I can buy them from the U.S. Any suggestions?
Get one of these bad boys. They'll know you mean business
http://www.timex.com/gp/product/B000JERFMI/ref=sc_pgp_c_1_1_267161011_m…
Seriously, if you want a watch either spend like $100 on something decent or spend some real money. Spending in that range just seems silly.
I had that Mickey Mouse watch as a kid!!
I think the best bang for your buck in the low- to mid-hundreds range is Seiko. I'm talking in terms of functionality, appearance, mechanics, etc. -- hard to go wrong. Check out timezone.com and you'll see that quite a few others will recommend the same.
Have you considered a Tag F1? Some might consider it 'too casual' for banking, but as an analyst you would be fine with most styles of the Formula One. I think the black, non-chrono F1 is a great looking watch, and it is versatile enough that you can wear it into the office and out on the weekends. You can pick up a new one from an authorized dealer for a price within your range, and they hold their value pretty well on the resale market. You could probably save even more with picking up a used one on eBay if you aren't concerned with sellers(assuming you're still getting a real Tag in the end). It's pretty easy to spot the legit auctions, and F1's are bulletproof, so condition is pretty much a non-issue if you want to pick one up secondhand. http://www.authenticwatches.com/f1mensquartz.html
If you want to spend under 5-hundo on a watch take a look at Tissot Chronographs. They're clean-looking, I particularly like the stainless line. Tissot is actually owned by swatch, I believe and you can pick up a nice one for 300-ish. http://www.watchesonnet.com/T17.1.526.52%20.html?id_partner=4
Personally I would save up for a nicer watch and try to find a deal. Jewelers are willing to haggle big-time these days and you can generally expect to get up to 30% off retail (never buy at retail price, it's just dumb.) I was shopping around at Tiffany's and this guy was selling my watch for more than twice what I paid for it. Ridiculous! I just picked up a Baume & Mercier that retails for 5, sells for 3 online, but I paid for 2 for it.... solid deal. You can find a nice B&M for around a grand, though. Their Classima Executive series is particularly sharp, IMO.
http://www.jomashop.com/classima.html
Though they do not hold their value as well as Rolex's or Cartier's... B&M's are beautifully designed, well-made watches and will be a heirloom investment time-piece. So ask yourself - why spend 500 on an OK watch when you can save up a bit more and spend 1g on a well-known Swiss watch. If you wait a little longer and go for an automatic, all the better.

So I thought I would take time away from ranking banks and rank what really is important to a good banker: watches. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a site that ranked the "hotness" factor of good mens watches, and if not start one right here. I just got Raymond Weil Nabuocco from my folks, its a beautiful watch but I don't know how popular it is. Any favorites or comments on the Weil throw em up.
Swatch
http://men.style.com/theupgrader/style/hotlist/dress-watches
However, my personal prestige ranking would be:
1) Breguet 2) Patek Philippe 3) Vacheron Constantin 4) Jaeger LeCoultre 5) A.Lange & Sohne 6) Augemars Piguet 7) Glashutte 8) Blancpain 9) Zenith 10) IWC
Specific models may lead to higher rankings. And a nice vintage Rolex would score some points too!
The right Baume & Mercier has a very classic look
I sometimes wonder if you people are actually like this in real life, or do you just go ape shit retarded when you post.
P.S- MY fav is the GS watch!
I know watches have been beaten to death in other topics, but I wanted to ask what people think about leather straps? I think like the relaxed classical look, but don't want to come off as a douche in interviews if leather straps are perceived as arrogant. Anyone have any watches in mind for the mid hundred range (500-650ish)?
BREITLING
$30 analog Timex - looks and runs just as good as any of those watches on that men.style.com website
http://www.amazon.com/Timex-Reader-Leather-Silver-Tone-T2H281/dp/B000AY…
Or if you are Hank Paulson get the higher priced digital Timex Ironman with rubber wristband
Looking for a nice simple watch http://www.amazon.com/ESQ-Movado-Folio-Stainless-07300770/dp/B000F3QOE8 http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Black-Leather-BM8240-03E/dp/B00…
A little nicer than that Timex above I think. Can't decide which one though.
lol what type of banker wears citizen. go back to ops, banker88. i'm sure those watches will go great with your squar-toe aldo shoes!
Just got this one http://www.oris.ch/collections/collections_detail.aspx?ln=en&modelid=1 paid a lot for it, feedback?
u should either get A) a nice ass watch or B) a standard digital watch
don't try to do anything in between. looks douche-ey.
Also only drive either a Toyota Yaris or a Rolls Royce Phantom. Don't try to drive anything in between. Looks douch-ey.
^ Could you go into further detail with douche-ey? It was the same price as an entry IWC I was looking at.
Bumping this thread.
I've read all the comments about how you can get by on a timex in IBD etc, but I've got about $1000 saved up and I want to buy a classical, clean watch. Not buying to impress anyone, just for myself.
That said, does anyone have any advice for a watch ~$1000? I was thinking about: http://www.longines.com/watches/the-longines-master-collection/L2.665.4…
Good choice. You may also want to look at Baume & Mercier, or a simpler TAG Heuer Carrera (non-chronograph).
However, if I was in your shoes, I'd wait until you can afford something in the $2000-3000 range and get a chronograph leather strap. It will look significantly better and you should be happier with the purchase in the long-term. Personally, if I bought a $1000 watch, I'd be waiting until the day I could upgrade it and it wouldn't keep me satisfied very long.
Bell & Ross makes a really great watch and have a few watches in that range (actually maybe just north of 1k, maybe like 1000-2000), but for a really nice lower priced watch B&R is really solid.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Bell-Ross-Vintage-120_W0QQitemZ330354619707QQcm…
(obviously, never get a watch on EBay)
Yeah, that's a thought that was floating around the back of my mind too...damn. Any other thoughts?
This is going to sound ignorant and watch enthusiasts are going to slam me, but what's the technical term for when there's a window in the face of the watch which shows the inner movements?
And what's the consensus on such designs?
Not sure I know the exact term. I call it a "see through window" or a "see through caseback".
If the back of the case is transparent -- that's generally pretty cool and others aren't able to see it.
If there is a window showing off the movement on the front of the watch -- eh, I guess it's cool, but it looks way too flashy to me. It's something that screams "ask me about my watch"
I THINK it's called a "skeleton" design, but I'm not 100% sure.
What do you guys think of these watches? Not looking for anything flashy, just a decently nice watch to wear for interviews. And I don't want a fugly Swatch or Fossil.
http://www.amazon.com/Skagen-Two-Tone-Bracelet-Watch-233LGSC/dp/B0000C9… http://www.amazon.com/ESQ-Movado-Folio-Stainless-07300770/dp/B000F3QOE8
really banker88? the skagen watch can pass for a woman's watch and if you knew anything about nice watches you would know that a true movado never has tickers or numbers because a true boss never has to be on time. besides most back-office kids have watches from aldo accessories.
The overcompensation in this thread can be heard from miles away...I've got a $70 Casio ana-digi and guess what? It's fine. It tells time, recharges the battery by sunlight and syncs to the atomic time server.
If you have a genuine passion for watches that's one thing, but to go around and claim that you have to have a >$2000 watch to be in banking is just sheer madness.
That is all.
yea shit everyone knows you need to have a > $3000 watch to be in banking... :S
That is all.
Alright I've decided to buy a watch cause I don't have a dress one, and I may as well for interviews. I like the classic simple look with a leather strap (no heavy chronographs), and am deciding between these three. Opinions please?

Do you want us to help you pick out your socks in the morning too?
Nah bro, I always wear my Costco brand socks. Just want an opinion on the watches.
2-3-1 here. Not a fan of the leather strap though.

Bam, next Henry Paulson
"Cowards die a thousand deaths, but the brave only one," Bill Shakespeare
yeah....leather straps are ok..i prefer a steel/gold/silver strap myself. Not a big fan of going simple....must have chronograph...pimped out!
If no chronograph..consider this one: http://www.alidamji.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/mw04_lg.jpg
(For those of you wondering..I am jokin)
banker88 i think my grandpa has one of those watches
I think Seiko and Casio Good for me.
My personal favorites are IWC, Audemars Piguet, Panerai, Rolex
but Fisher had a pretty good list of the general ranking of most high-end watch brands.
my two watches are a Cartier French Tank which I wear with suits and a Panerai Luminor Marina which I wear with more casual outfits (ie 85% of the time). Both are classics that I will own for the rest of my life which is how i justified the cost.
I wear a Movado, and a Tissot
Just bought a 18kt white gold and diamond 2010 edition 36mm Rolex datejust..
Say what you want, I LOVE it!
This is what we go to work for!!
Nice pick-up, although, I am not a fan of the Datejust. It is just too small for me.
I actually acquired a Yachtmaster 16622 and LOVE IT, even though 40mm was not my original preference.
What do you guys think about Zenith's? Thinking of getting one.
It is absolutely idiotic to rank watches. First of all, each manufacturer has it's own character and unique qualities. Second, you should buy what you personally enjoy, not what carries the most prestige. Doing the latter is guaranteed to make you a tool, if not by appearance, certainly by fact.
http://www.chronoshark.com/ i enjoy this site a new watch everyday!
i like franck muller, the crazy hours edition was the best!
What's that British watch company that makes pretty nice watches starting at the ~$300 range? I can't remember.
Christopher Ward is what I was looking for. What do you guys think of the brand? http://www.christopherward.co.uk/men.html
A Lange & Sohne all the way
cartier pasha seatimer - black rubber over steel wristband
Different occasions call for different watches:
Breitling is an amazing company. I have also had a great experience with Panerai watches (Available around $5k-$10k Range). If your looking for a conservative look and price, Both Seiko and Bulova have a decent line. (Available around $500) Hope this helps.
Forgot to mention Omega.
Different occasions certainly call for different watches but my rankings are as follows:
Patek Lange & Sohne AP Breguet Girard Perregaux IWC Jaeger Panerai Rolex Omega
Have a couple on the list, and a couple which aren't listed. Bottom line is watches are a lot of fun.
my dad knew the guy who set up IWC. The watches are not great quality relative to other swiss watches. But the chap who owns it got a really cheap slot on an F1 promo, had his logo dripping off the cars - rich people bought, then suddenly it becomes prestigous - now everyone buys.
I don't think you can really rank luxury watches though. It's hard to compare a brietling with a rolex with a patek, because they all have such distincitive styles that you just find the one you like (and save up for twice as long if its a patek!)
Like art, all matters of style are pretty personal!
Did you pull this info out of your ass? Or is your dad legitimately over 150 years old because IWC was founded in the 1800's...
Let me remind you that IWC was ranked #1 in the yearly Luxury Brand Status Index Surveys two years in a row...
and to even put Breitling in the same sentence as Rolex and then to even put Rolex in the same sentence as Patek is madness...
Seeing how the company was founded in 1868, this is somewhat unlikely.
Milus Tirion TriRetrograde is my new favorite watch.... well second favorite after the IWC Portugese.
Always leave it to a WSO monkey to be the skeptic, this kid is actually Edward Cullen and his father is thirteen-hundred years old.

No more than $40 as it will just end up getting trashed.
coz it's heavy duty but not very elegant. i personally prefer the sports-elgant watches. the ones with hands but with timer as well.
important: don't go for solars. i have it from good source that they tend to fuck up.
i have an orient. very good watches, not too expensive. then again they'll probably cost more than 40$, but the good watches are also very durable. my watch guy called the one he sold me a tractor. i liked his use of words. i basically warned him that i tend to drop my watches, sometimes from two stories (accidentally!) so he gave me my current watch. can go in saltwater, sandwater, acidwater... but it cost about 250$ http://www.orient-watch.com/product/index.html warmly recommended, if you can find it.

Actually I really like that. Don't think I can drop $250, like you said I treat my watches brutally so it needs to be indestructible.
I'll check ebay.

I'd get an Omega Speedmaster Pro for around that price.

[quote=Dr Barnaby Fulton]http://www.ivy-style.com/watch-what-happens-introducing-sartego-the-sar…] Wow I think this watch actually looks really cool. I know this was posted as a joke, but would having a watch like this be frowned upon?
I'm not a huge fan of TAG typically (and I'm not sure why) but I do think that is a really nice looking watch. I don't know enough about timepieces to offer solid advice on whether it would be a good purchase or not. There are a fair number of watch aficionados on WSO so I'm sure you will get some better advice.
Regards
For that price point, you could get an Omega as Banker88 suggested. (I'm not a fan of TAG either cphbravo, I think some of their watches are overpriced for its brand...)
For ~3k, if you REALLY look, you may find an entry level IWC. But it wouldn't have the same complications as the one you picked - it would be a very bare-bones IWC. I saw a plain portofino (non-chrono) for under $3K. Or a Mark XVI (http://www.alanmarcusco.com/noframes/iw3255-01.htm).
Another option is looking second-hand. A lot of people (for whatever reason) do catch and release a lot (buy a watch, wear it a month, sell it for lower), so if you're lucky - you could find a month-old watch for 80% of the market price, affording you to look at brands and models that are otherwise out of reach.
There are also entry-level Rolexes for 3k+ (I think? Not too knowledgeable on Rolexes - some other WSO can comment here). There's some Breitling watches (there are mixed opinions on whether its good value or not) around that range. And if you are willing to try non-mainstream brands, you can also take a look at Nomos for that price, and Frederique Constant if you want to go $1-2K.
agree with Omega Speedmaster Pro. or go with an auto seamaster. i like some of the oris and fortis watches as well, some fall below that price point
Usually I just go with whatever comes with my happy meal
Platinum Rolex Datejust with diamond hour stops all the way
Is it just me, or is the question of a watch purchase's acceptance in the workplace the ultimate sign of insecurity? One of these threads is started on a weekly basis.
One of my favorite quotes is from Satchel Paige, the pitcher, who said "Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you." If you're always looking over your shoulder to see who's checking out your gear, you probably shouldn't be investing large sums of money for your bank or clients, because they won't give a shit about your personal appearance beyond its acceptance in the workplace. Isn't there a watch on the lower left of your computer screen?
I dont like Tags because they remind me of high school graduation gifts but the Carrera is a decent looking watch (I would never buy one for more than $1,500). I definitely agree with the Reco for a Sea or Speedmaster in that price range.
I would get a seiko or an orient
agreed with never spending more than 1.5k on a TAG unless its a monaco
