Any advice
Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum. I'll introduce myself. My name is Gavin Van Rensburg. I've emmigrated from South Africa to Canada. I have a degree in B.Comm Investment Management and I've written my CFA Level 1. I've been mulling over in what direction I would like to go in this vast financial world.
I worked 2 years at a company called "The Burgiss Group" (private equity solutions), where I was a 'financial researcher' (basically a data monkey which killed my soul) and eventually quit because I ended up learning absolutely nothing at this company (except minor excel skills and tiny winy bit of financial analysis).
So I've been going through articles and been speaking to people I know in the financial world and have decided I'd like to pursue a path in Asset Management. I have questions which I'm hoping someone here could provide clarification or any advice. I'm looking to get into a firm in Toronto at entry-level where I can start networking and building myself up and learning as much as possible. (I'm currently in SK which is a good distance from Toronto).
Which markets would I need to be following? I've been following the euro crisis and a bit of the U.S. industry. I'm only starting to follow Canada economy now.
Which sectors would be advised to follow as well? Bonds, stocks, commodities? H
How difficult is it to land an entry-level job at an AM firm?
What type of questions are expected for AM role interviews?
Any additional advice from anyone would be appreciated. I've been going through forum posts and my stomach is churning. It's very intimidating but I have to face the music and start putting myself out there.
It will depend a lot on the company you will be joining.
You should ate least have a general idea about how global markets are performing, the issues in the euro zone and potential scenarios for the future.
At first, I thought this was one of those Nigerian Prince scams...lolz
