BlackRock Internship Team Allocation

Does anyone know whether BlackRock automatically allocates its interns to the different sub-teams of a division or whether one can express team preferences at the beginning of the programme? For example, if I get an offer for their Fixed Income Group within PMG, can I choose between joining one of their sub-teams: Portfolio Management, Research and Product Strategy (or at least tell them my preferences) or would I just get allocated by HR depending on their needs?

And in case that they automatically allocate and I would get assigned to a team which I do not like, what would be the chances of joining a different team full-time after the internship?

Thank you for your input!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, internship team allocation at large financial institutions like BlackRock typically follows a structured process. While specific details for BlackRock aren't provided in the context, here's a general overview based on similar institutions:

  1. HR Allocation with Preferences: Many firms allow interns to express preferences for certain teams or divisions, but ultimately HR and the needs of the business play a significant role in the final allocation. This is often a mix of your preferences and the firm's requirements.

  2. Internship Experience and Mobility: If you find yourself in a team that doesn't align with your career goals, the best approach is to perform exceptionally well in your current role. Demonstrating strong performance can open opportunities for mobility within the firm. Networking internally and expressing your interests to HR or your mentor can also aid in exploring other team options for full-time positions post-internship.

  3. Networking and Internal Moves: As seen in other firms, such as JP Morgan, internal mobility is encouraged, and networking within the firm can be beneficial. It's important to handle such situations delicately and professionally to avoid any negative impressions.

While these points provide a general framework, it's advisable to directly check with HR at BlackRock or connect with current or past interns for more specific insights related to BlackRock's internship program.

I'm pretty sure you make the sub selection during the application process. I remember active fundamental research for equities and credit being separated from the other job functions when i applied.
