Capital Group Equity Research Associate program

Anyone have thoughts on CapGroup's equity research associate program (not to be confused with TAP)? Seems like they hire a lot of IBD analysts who have completed their 2 year programs, with less of an idea generation role and more of a modeling monkey role? Thoughts on the program would be appreciated, and if many associates are promoted to analyst positions with their own coverage or if they must move on to another firm for that to happen.

Just saw this...1 in 5, maybe even less. I interviewed with 2 groups at Cap Group. Did not get offer from either one. In the first one, I made a wreck of the fit questions. The recruiter told me the 2nd group was very tough...they had been looking for someone for over a year. My sector knowledge was not up to par there. Good luck, and I would totally take an offer there if you get it.

Interview was straight forward. Nothing too technical. Mostly fit type questions. From memory - some of the questions were "how would you analyze a company if I just gave you the ticker" , "How would you prepare for a holding that was going to report quarterly earnings tomorrow", On balance nothing too hard. Got the impression that Associates aren't really valued there though - they were very clear about it not being a career track / promotion type role.

Had a friend that went through that program a few years ago... generally liked it, good work/lifestyle mix and it helped them get into a top bschool. My friend pursued a different line of work after the MBA, but generally recommended it. Don't know about comp, but safe bet that its less than banking. Also - capital group has a number of offices around the world that may have very different cultures... where is this position based?

sorry, what i meant was just in terms of this opp compared to other exit opps out of banking. obviously, VC/PE is a different space. But im just trying to understand in terms of prestige how capital group would rank. its more comparable to HF because of public mkts, but really trying to gauge if this is a highly sought after position

I've heard the have a kick ass retirement plan. Other than that, I haven't heard a lot. I've worked with a few guys that used to be there and they have never said anything bad about it. That said, they obviously left for a reason.

One of the premier long only firms to work at. In terms of comp...just look at active AUM per investment professional (or if you prefer, layer average fee % on AUM then take a comp margin off of that) and you will see that it's lucrative. If this is for front office investment research I would take it no question.

This is right. If you want to work in long-only equity research, there are very few places that are equal to capital group. They're insanely selective of course, hiring almost exclusively from HBS and Stanford.
