Cost of living

I\'ve been invited for final round for an Asset Management Group Associates Trainee Program for PNC in 2 weeks. The document they sent me says we need to be able to rank our LOB preferences and top 3 preference in location. The choices for LOB are Wealth Management, Institutional, and Hawthorn. The choices are, but not limited to: Cleveland, Louisville, NJ, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Atlanta, Tampa, Florida, and/or Washington DC. They also say the offer will be determined primarily by line of business and secondarily by geography, so I\'m assuming they mean the salary varies amongst these things. Does anyone have any insight into which LOB would pay the highest? Also any thoughts on which locations I should pick? I obviously want the highest salary I can get, even if cost of living isn\'t ideal but I\'m open to any thoughts. Thanks.

SAY WHAT??? You ever heard the saying \"Making money is easy, holding on to it is the hard part\"??? Why would you want the high salary with the high COL? You want the lowest COL and a valid wage for your position. I understand that you might want the higher numbers because it would (slightly) help in a future job search, but what good is that if you can\'t hold on to your money now?

Of the list you posted, Tampa is probably the best bet. No snow, no state income tax and still a large enough salary to justify a good salary. You\'re young so maybe you\'re not thinking about things like taxes, but get a few years under you and you\'ll realize that COL and taxes are the only things that matter in personal finance.

Personally, I\'d choose Atlanta if COL is a concern. Washington, DC is fairly expensive. I hear Philly is as well. Atlanta is a good option. Cost of living even in Buckhead (upscale area) is cheap compared to a similar area of the country. Upscale restaurants and shopping.

PM me for details and I can give you more advice on where to live in Atlanta.

I would have to agree on Atlanta. Philly as a close second.

Both cities have a lot going for it..

Florida trumps both for state taxes. Philly is not bad with the PA flat tax of 3% and ATL will cost you 6%. Philly has snow, Tampa has chicks in bikinis. The choice is clear . . .

To each his own. I would take Atlanta over Tampa any day. I've been to Tampa and as far as I could see, it's pretty red.. not much diversity. Atlanta has good nightlife, decent weather, great resturaunts, and lots of women. The only downsides I could really see are traffic and pockets of crime. I would never move to a place based on taxes.. thats just me.

How do the salaries compare in these different locations? Are any of them going to be virtually the same or significantly lower or higher? It's a position out of undergrad with PNC AMG Group

It all depends on how the individual company views their position/salary/location. But, generally speaking, these are all similar towns in size (at least the metro areas), so I'm guessing that their salaries are going to be comparable with some relatively minor variations. So that's why I recommend looking at things like taxes since that's one of the few things that are excluded from salary comparisons. You're starting to see this more & more if you follow sports. You see athletes that are now taking 10M to play in FL instead of 12M to play in NY because the NY taxes will kill you and the 10M is actually worth more at the end of the day.

My top 3 locations are DC, Philly and ATL but I can't decide between the 3 of them. I know DC would be the most expensive, but also probably the highest salary is that right? I feel like Philly and ATL would be able the same COL, but I'm not well educated on the differences in COL/state taxes so I'm not sure. Are there any thoughts on what type of salary i could expect from PNC in an Associates Trainee position? the program is 13 months then you are put into one of the 3 LOBs in the asset management group. My immediate guess would be 55-60 in ATL/philly and 60-70 in DC?

Trust me. From living in DC, be prepared to pay roughly 1500 to 1800 per month for a decent apt. in NW DC. And believe me, from living in DC, you really don't want to live anywhere else in DC but Northwest DC unless you want to have your head shoved up your keister by some thug or worse. NW DC is close to decent shopping in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Upscale restaurants in the area. Dupont Circle (hot nightlife - Remember Real World DC?)

Atlanta on the other hand has an upscale area to live in called Buckhead. Best shopping, restaurants, nightlife in the South. Lenox Square Mall,Phipps Plaza. apartments in buckhead could be at around 1000-1100. Much better cost than DC. Also, COL is better in other areas as well. Loads of hot women at places like Halo Lounge, Midtown, etc.

Atlanta is better all around!

DC is a horrible choice. It very expensive to live there, traffic sucks and the city is run by morons. As someone else mentioned, rents are a killer in DC. Anything decent is mega bucks and you MUST be in NW, nowhere else.

Taxes in KY aren't bad and Louisville has a good night life with 4th street live. If you like UFC fights their usually held at the YUM center. Some great resturants, and plenty of hot girls supplied by U of L. You can get a decent loft close to work for around $650 maybe $800 if you want to be right next to work. Best of all, you can be my local contact in finance lol.

Wherever I see people doing something the way it's always been done, the way it's 'supposed' to be done, following the same old trends, well, that's just a big red flag to me to go look somewhere else. - Mark Cuban

Guys, how about some advice with rent and taxes taken out of the picture. I have a great deal of wealth to my name and really just want thoughts on the difference in possible salaries in the different locations as well as where would provide the best opportunity for someone working at PNC in Asset Management.

Dude, then I don't know why you started this thread. If you really just want that answer then call up their HR people and ask. How the fuck are we going to know that answer??? You've kind of wasted our time here dude.
