Head of AM Division

How long does it take to become head of BB or MM Bank’s Asset Management division. Are these people former PM’s. Or are they just good relationship managers/ sales people?? For example does Mary Erodes (JPM AM&WM CEO) have an experience as a PM??

It takes a while and, more importantly, a lot of stepping stone positions to get there - climbing the ladder is a phrase for a reason. It's less about 'what' you choose than it is about being extremely effective, visible and going after positions that will build the experience you need. Often you'll see jumping across firms, a top B-school and then additional roles within, or around, the division they end up running.

Something to consider is whether you actually want that type of role. At that point you are effectively a risk manager and business operator for the bank - don't blow up their balance sheet, hit the ratios you need, manage the risk aggressively to avoid compliance headaches and if you manage to grow the business on top of it, you might get a shot at the top role. Oh - and don't forget the politics and optics of roles like that. It's at least half if not the majority of the role.
