Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems that the effectiveness of headhunters can vary greatly depending on the specific area of expertise. For more generalized spaces like private equity, headhunters are used much more frequently as PE funds often don't have the manpower to search for all the qualified banking analysts, so they'll tend to outsource it.

However, in highly specialized areas with a very narrow set of candidates that are well known to each other, headhunters may offer little value. In these cases, it's often recommended to go direct.

Remember, headhunters will call you if they have a mandate, and they will find you if you are worth finding. So, make sure your LinkedIn profile and resume are up to date and showcase your skills and experience effectively.

If you're looking for a PM role, I'd recommend reaching out to headhunters who specialize in your industry or desired role, and also applying directly to companies you're interested in. Good luck!
