Help needed

I have been unemployed for about a year now, and I honestly am desperate. I come from a asset servicing back office background and I am trying to get into middle office/investment operations space in Asset management. I am also based in London.

If there’s anyone working in the roles mentioned above or if anyone you know works in those same roles as welll, I would be more than happy to have a chat with someone and forward my cv on to them.

Thanks in advance

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a back-office role to middle office or investment operations in asset management is challenging but achievable with the right strategy. Here are some actionable steps to help you:

1. Networking is Key

  • Leverage LinkedIn to connect with professionals in middle office or investment operations roles within asset management firms in London. Personalize your connection requests and express your interest in learning about their career paths.
  • Attend industry events, webinars, or meetups in London focused on asset management or finance. These are great opportunities to meet people who might be able to refer you.
  • Reach out to alumni from your university who are in relevant roles. Alumni networks are often very supportive.

2. Tailor Your CV and Cover Letter

  • Highlight transferable skills from your back-office experience, such as attention to detail, process management, and familiarity with financial products.
  • Emphasize any experience you have with trade support, risk management, or client interaction, as these are often relevant to middle office roles.
  • Use industry-specific keywords to ensure your CV passes through applicant tracking systems.

3. Upskill Strategically

  • Consider certifications like the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) or IMC (Investment Management Certificate) to demonstrate your commitment to the asset management industry.
  • Familiarize yourself with tools and systems commonly used in middle office roles, such as Bloomberg, Aladdin, or other portfolio management systems.

4. Target Firms with Internal Mobility

  • Some firms are known for promoting internal mobility from back office to middle office. Research asset management firms in London that have a track record of supporting such transitions.
  • Apply for roles in firms that value internal progression, even if it means starting in a slightly different role to get your foot in the door.

5. Leverage Recruitment Agencies

  • Partner with recruitment agencies in London that specialize in asset management or middle office roles. They often have insights into unadvertised opportunities and can advocate on your behalf.

6. Be Persistent and Patient

  • The transition may take time, but persistence is crucial. Keep applying, networking, and refining your approach.

If you're open to sharing your CV with professionals in the WSO community, consider posting in relevant threads or forums where users discuss middle office or asset management roles. Many users are willing to help or provide referrals if they see genuine effort and interest.

Good luck!
