Finding a Job in Asset Management Right After College?

I’m currently a sophomore in uni and interested in starting a career in asset management after graduation, but I’m not sure what the best path is. What steps should I be taking now to make sure I can land a good entry-level job in this field? Additionally, how to best prepare for interviews in the space, are there any guides like there are for IB interviews?

Thank you

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps and advice to help you land a job in asset management right after college:

Steps to Take Now:

  1. Networking:

    • Start building your network early. Attend industry events, join finance clubs, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn.
    • Engage with your local CFA Society and participate in their events.
  2. Internships:

    • Secure internships in asset management or related fields like wealth management, equity research, or corporate finance. This experience is crucial.
    • Consider summer analyst programs at big asset managers like Fidelity or Harris Associates.
  3. Education and Certifications:

    • Maintain a strong GPA, especially in finance-related courses.
    • Consider pursuing the CFA designation. The CFA is highly regarded in asset management and can make you more appealing to employers.
  4. Practical Experience:

    • Manage your own stock portfolio to demonstrate your passion and understanding of investing.
    • Develop a track record of investing and be prepared to discuss your investment philosophy and decisions.
  5. Resume and Applications:

    • Prepare a well-done stock pitch to include with your resume when applying to boutique asset managers.
    • Apply broadly, including to smaller firms where you might have a better chance of getting noticed.

Preparing for Interviews:

  1. Interview Preparation:

    • Prepare for interviews by understanding the typical questions asked in asset management interviews. These often include questions about your investment philosophy, specific stock pitches, and market views.
    • Practice behavioral interview questions to articulate your passion for investing and your career goals.
  2. Resources:

    • While there are specific guides for investment banking interviews, similar resources for asset management can be found on WSO. Look for interview prep resources, mock interviews, and resume reviews offered by professionals on the platform.

Additional Tips:

  • Cold Emailing:

    • Cold email professionals in the industry to seek informational interviews and advice. This can also help you get your foot in the door.
  • Persistence:

    • Breaking into asset management can be challenging, especially from a non-target school. Persistence and continuous learning are key.

By following these steps and utilizing the resources available on WSO, you can increase your chances of landing a good entry-level job in asset management after graduation. Good luck!

Going to be tough - typically LO AM don't recruit from undergrad. Some larger ones do I believe but they would be tougher than IB (low supply high demand) and not many of them have full-time permanent conversion. If you still want to go directly to LO AM, make your mind up on whether you want equities or fixed income. Then you can hone in on the sort of the skill sets you want to improve on. If you want to get into equity investing in LO AM, typically route would be graduate with good GPA, get into sell side equity research and spend minimum 2 years, network to find a spot in LO AM or do MBA and recruit from there. If you want to get into credit, wait for someone else with more experience to chime in.. all I've heard is PIMCO > all.

If you aren't successful in getting into sell-side equity research?

- hustle / network and get in OR

- do Masters / MBA to recruit

To my knowledge, there isn't a stepping stone you can take to get into sell-side research. It's either you do an internship and convert or recruit directly out of undergrad/graduate programs. Maybe someone else who's more knowledgeable can chime in.
