How tailored does my pitch have to be for cold emailing?

I am planning to cold email for a summer internship. I have a very good stock pitch I submitted for multiple competitions and I’ve gotten good feedback on. It’s well researched (and includes info from an expert call) and shows my skill well. The problem is my stock is an international mid-cap short, but the firm I am planning to cold email for is domestic long only small cap.
It would take 3-4 weeks to put together a new pitch that better matches their strategies due to other immediate priorities, but is it better to wait and send a more tailored pitch or would it be okay to send the pitch I have?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, tailoring your pitch to align with the firm's strategy is highly recommended. A stock pitch is the most critical aspect of your cold email, as it demonstrates your investing acumen and suitability for the firm's focus. Since the firm you're targeting is domestic long-only small-cap, sending a pitch for an international mid-cap short might not resonate well with their investment philosophy.

While your current pitch may showcase your skills, it could signal a lack of understanding or alignment with the firm's strategy. If you can manage the time, creating a new pitch that aligns with their focus would significantly increase your chances of standing out. However, if waiting 3-4 weeks to craft a tailored pitch risks missing the opportunity, you could consider sending your current pitch with a clear explanation. For example, you might acknowledge the mismatch and emphasize your ability to adapt your skills to their strategy, while expressing your enthusiasm for their specific focus.

Ultimately, a tailored pitch is ideal, but if time constraints are critical, ensure your email highlights your flexibility and willingness to align with their investment approach.
