Is IU Target for AM?

Hey everyone!

I transferred into IU last year and was accepted to Kelley this summer. That being said, I am curious if Kelley is a target for AM? It seems everyone only focuses on consulting and IB in Kelley, I haven't heard much about AM.

Also, another off topic question: Does being a veteran hold any weight when applying to internships? I noticed the majority of BBs mention veterans a bit but, is it truly beneficial?

Any information on how to break into this field would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

-Christian

For a vet?

Yes. Post MBA vets are a common commodity, and are competing intensely with other vets at Ivy MBA programs for spots.

Undergrad vet candidates are almost unicorns.

There are very few IM "target schools" since IM recruiting is so disparate compared to IB and consulting recruiting. I would say Columbia and Wharton are the only real target MBA program. Outside of that, most firms will collect resumes only instead of doing OCR.

Short answer: you have to create your own path to IM from almost every MBA program. You can't rely on career services to take you to the promised land, unlike with IB and consulting.

Certainly helps but I agree with the above that veteran status probably isn't a gamechanger, especially since there are a lot of vets post the Iraq and Afghanistan era.

I forgot to mention I am undergrad, not MBA. I don't know if that makes a huge difference or not.

In that case, I'm confident it would help you stand out since you're presumably more mature and dedicated than the average undergrad. Some banks have special recruiting programs targeting veterans, but most investment managers tend to have less structured recruiting programs. Put another way, your status as a veteran will help you stand out in a stack of resumes, but I don't think it will do anything special to get you in that stack originally.
