LinkedIn Questions

Hello all, just joined this site after lurking for a while and I have some questions about setting up my LinkedIn profile. Some context - I am a current first year community college student looking to break into asset management. I will be at a 4 year university this fall (T20). I am setting up my LinkedIn profile and I have a few questions:

  1. I currently have no work experience like internships in the asset management field. However, I work a few jobs (fast food restaurant and tournament operations (gate, scorekeeping etc) for a large youth football organization that is nationally known). Should I list these jobs on my LinkedIn? Or should I leave out the fast food job? I’ve seen mixed opinions on this and I’m curious as to what you guys have to say.
  2. Should I leave my community college off my profile? I was involved in a few clubs there but nothing relevant to finance. The main reason I’m thinking of leaving it off is because instead I want for my 4 year university to be highlighted since it is a pretty big name. I’ve seen some people on this forum mention how attending community college directly out of high school may raise some red flags or questions which is why I’m not sure if I should include it.

All and any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

When setting up your LinkedIn profile, here’s what you should consider based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Listing Non-Finance Work Experience:

    • Absolutely include your current jobs, even if they aren't directly related to asset management. Highlight transferable skills like teamwork, time management, customer service, and leadership. For example, your role in tournament operations can demonstrate organizational skills and the ability to handle logistics under pressure.
    • The fast food job can also be included, but focus on framing it in a way that emphasizes soft skills like work ethic, adaptability, and communication. These are qualities that resonate with recruiters, even in finance.
  2. Community College on LinkedIn:

    • Opinions on this vary, but the consensus from WSO threads suggests that you should include your community college experience. It shows your academic journey and determination, especially since you're transferring to a T20 university.
    • To keep the focus on your 4-year university, you can list the community college under "Education" but keep it concise. Highlight your 4-year university more prominently by detailing relevant coursework, clubs, or activities there.
    • If you’re concerned about potential bias, remember that many professionals on WSO have successfully transitioned from community colleges to top finance roles. What matters most is how you present yourself and your story.
  3. Additional Tips for LinkedIn:

    • Create a professional headline that reflects your aspirations, e.g., "Aspiring Asset Management Professional | T20 University Student."
    • Build your network by connecting with alumni from your 4-year university, especially those in asset management.
    • Join LinkedIn groups related to finance and asset management to stay informed and visible.
    • Start engaging with content by liking, commenting, or sharing posts from professionals in the industry.

By presenting your experiences strategically and focusing on your growth story, you can make a strong impression on LinkedIn. Good luck!
