Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about starting a career in a small Long-Only (LO) fund in Hong Kong:

Career Path in a Small LO Fund:

  • Team Size and AUM: Starting in a small LO fund with an AUM of USD 700-800 million and a team size smaller than 10 can offer a unique experience. You will likely get more hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of the business due to the smaller team size.
  • Fundamental Research: Given your interest in the fundamental side of research, a small LO fund can be a good fit as it often involves deep dive fundamental analysis.

Worth Considering?

  • Growth Opportunities: Smaller funds can offer significant learning opportunities and a chance to build a strong foundation in investment research. However, the growth trajectory might be slower compared to larger firms.
  • Job Security: Job security in LO funds is generally higher compared to Hedge Funds (HFs) as LOs are typically funded by long-term, stable funding sources.

Transition to Top AM or HF:

  • Jumping to Top AM or HF: It is possible to transition to a top Asset Management (AM) firm or even a Hedge Fund (HF) after gaining 1-2 years of experience. Building a strong track record and credibility in your current role will be crucial.
  • Career Mobility: The ladder in LO is slimmer compared to HF, but having a track record and credibility can help you move to a PM role in the future.

Additional Considerations:

  • Administrative Work: Be prepared for a significant amount of administrative and paperwork as an analyst in a traditional LO.
  • Internal Processes: Traditional LOs are often institutionalized, meaning you will need to go through a series of internal processes for tasks like stock pitches.

In summary, starting your career in a small LO fund in Hong Kong can be a valuable experience, especially if you are passionate about fundamental research. It can also serve as a stepping stone to transition to top AM firms or HFs in the future, provided you build a strong track record and credibility.
