MBA vs Masters in Finance vs Masters in Financial Economics

Hello Everyone,

As someone who wants to pivot from Engineering to Asset Management, I was told obtaining a MBA was the best way to go about this. I was curious if it made more sense to maybe pursue a Masters in Finance or a Masters in Financial Economics instead - potentially gain a more in-depth understanding of the subjects at hand. What do y'all think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Kouna

M.S. in Finance will be fine for the transition, but depending on your experience might start as an analyst or associate and will need to work to move up. Try to get an internship while studying to get your foot in the door. The problem with an M.S., depending on the school, is that it almost cost as much as an MBA. If that is your case than might as well go for your MBA. Hopefully that helps.

I would say it really depends several variables what kind of asset management you want to get in. Quant will be better served by an MS but an MBA is well suited for fundamental stock picking. I had a background in accounting before doing an MBA and have since transferred into a fundamentals driven mutual fund. The MBA curriculum has served me very well. You’ll also want to consider the alum bases/networks of each school... that will determine a lot.
