This is an extremely generalized statement and I have no way of knowing your firm's specific policy, but in general larger firms will reject via email (or no contact at all) and accept via phone call. HR just doesn't have time to call each rejection and provide feedback / listen to crying over the phone.

Again, don't go tell your parents or anything because I'm just some guy on the internet — but if I had to bet I'd bet on the call being an invitation to the next round.

hey thanks for the reply! understand what you are saying and it is much appreciated. fyi early feb was the last round so I am just waiting on the final decision! if thats any help...

Back when I was interviewing for IB SA, I had DB HR email me to say they had "exciting news," and that they would call me this afternoon. They rejected me, and then tried offering some sketchy middle office position. I laughed all the way through their near-bankruptcy though, so I guess I dodged a bullet.
