As LAWM said, they sold their asset management business. What remains are MSIM and the retail brokerage, which is PWM and Smith Barney. MSIM is a series of boutiques within MS and they're scattered around the world - they make their own investment decisions, as well as provide their institutional clients with access to hedge funds and private equity funds. The retail brokerage manages assets of the mass affluent and HNW/UHNW individuals.
