Options for Rising Junior looking for AM 2025

Hey guys,

I'm a rising junior looking for some sort of AM role for 2025. I'm from a non-target (UT Austin) with a 3.8 GPA. I'm currently working at a tiny PE firm in my local area which has been good; however, I wanted to break into AM although I am relatively uninformed in the world of AM as most of my efforts have been directed toward IB. The two things I want to know are, Is it to late to recruit AM, and if it is not were should I direct my efforts (smaller firms potentially if bbs are done.)

Thanks.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights and steps you can take as a rising junior looking to break into Asset Management (AM) for 2025:

  1. Recruitment Timeline:

    • Not Too Late: It's not too late to start recruiting for AM roles. While some larger firms may have already started their recruitment process, there are still plenty of opportunities available, especially with smaller firms.
    • Networking: Begin networking immediately. Reach out to alumni, attend industry events, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Networking can often open doors that formal applications cannot.
  2. Targeting Firms:

    • Smaller Firms: If larger firms (BBs) have completed their recruitment, focus on smaller firms. These firms often have more flexible timelines and can offer valuable experience.
    • Boutique Firms: Similar to smaller firms, boutique AM firms can provide hands-on experience and may have less rigid recruitment schedules.
  3. Preparation:

    • Learn About AM: Since your background is more focused on IB, take the time to educate yourself about AM. Read industry reports, follow market trends, and understand the key differences between AM and IB.
    • Technical Skills: Ensure you have a strong grasp of financial modeling, valuation techniques, and portfolio management. These skills are crucial in AM roles.
  4. Application Strategy:

    • Resume and Cover Letter: Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your relevant experience and skills. Emphasize your GPA, your current role at the PE firm, and any relevant coursework or projects.
    • Internships: Look for internships that can bridge the gap between your current experience and your desired AM role. Even if it's not a direct AM role, any finance-related internship can be beneficial.
  5. Additional Resources:

    • WSO Resources: Utilize WSO's resources such as the Financial Modeling Resources, Excel Resources, and the Investment Banking Interview Prep guides. These can help you build the necessary skills and knowledge for AM roles.

By following these steps, you can effectively position yourself for AM recruitment and increase your chances of landing a role for 2025. Good luck!
