Pension fund to HF?
The typical path to get to a large HF is working the first 2-3 years at an IB. But can you get there without the sell-side experience by working at a pension or mutual fund? Asking as a Canadian HS senior considering different aspects of different uni programs. Thanks!
Pension fund - not likely as the work is asset allocation.
Mutual fund - a top mutual fund investment definitely opens the door to hedge funds, though this is harder to do at the lower end mutual funds.

More difficult.
Investment roles at top MFs are vastly more difficult to get into. It's a function of available seats. Banks have large analyst classes and recruit every year at their target schools. MFs have much smaller hiring needs.
