Picking up sectors ASAP
Hi all,
just wondering if any of you have any advice in learning a unknown sector in the shortest amount of time other than reading news-related, firm-related, outlooks. maybe these are the few, but if it was to be in order? will be working as a generalist so there is a need for me to broaden my scope to more than just 1-2 sectors.
Thanks!
Patience. You're not going to pick up anything in a day. In addition to the sources you listed, look for pimers and - this next one will take some time - go through some recent 10-Ks/10-Qs and conference call transcripts of companies in the sector.
Thank you RobberBaron123. Appreciate your advice :D
Sell-side research is very helpful for picking up the terminology and what metrics people tend to look at.
That opens up another can of wormsright?. Most sell-side reports are filled with data that is cherry picked to suit the entire report. no doubt it is correct data, but it may not tell the entire story. This might tend to confuse and even mislead the less informed. Like me. Haha
No, it's still good. If you look through 5 different reports on the sectors, you'll soon understand what are the key drivers / KPIs for said sector and how people tend to think about it all. You don't have to agree with the conclusions in said reports, yet it still saves you a bucket load of time if you're starting fresh on a sector.
