PIMCO FT Recruiting
Hey everyone,
I’m currently a summer analyst at GSAM/MSIM/JPAM in a fixed income research type role, and will be graduating from an undergrad east coast target school in 2021. I’m originally from California and would love the opportunity to move back home and work for PIMCO for FT as a portfolio or credit analyst. Does anyone know anything about their recruitment process/timeline and what they generally look for? I also have IB experience if that would help.
Also, I would really appreciate if anyone could provide some insight on potential career progression from an undergrad role here. Is it possible to work your way up to a PM position from the analyst program or do they push people out? If they push people out, what are the exit opportunities typically like? What kind of work do they typically give analysts?
I’ve tried to do some research on this but haven’t found much. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Re PM, I have heard they typically require an MBA from a top school, even if you were a portfolio analyst. That means you could have been other places, got the MBA and got recruited OR you could be there, left for MBA, and came back via FT recruiting. Assuming the latter, I would think it would be easier if they knew you and liked you.
I believe career progression in most of their positions requires MBA / CFA. They are a deep knowledge firm.

PIMCO don't hire full investment or client professionals from undergrad.
At best you'll get a middle office support role (portfolio analyst, product analyst) or a client-focused support role (account analyst). To get into their full IP positions you need to either come from the sellside (trading for PM, research for credit research), from another AM house or recruit from a top MBA (for all full roles Portfolio Manager, Credit Research, Product Manager, Account Manager).
Just a word of warning if you're considering them over an actual investment role at another AM house or division. I would probably lean against doing PIMCO if you can - you'll build up a better skillset elsewhere pre-MBA.
Does Pimco hire ft out of MBAs if you don’t intern there?
What career path can be had starting in Middle Office or Account Analyst? Can I make a decent living? I don't have an elite background so signing these roles would very much be a humbling accomplishment for me. Thank you
PIMCO hired interns this year to work on the investment team. I think they are trying to build up a junior program with a clear path to PM
Sure.. in private credit.
Product Analyst seems like a FO role considering they deal with investment strategies, work with PMs, and create the products for the clients. Considering building your skillset, I'd say you would gain a lot from that role or any other equivalent. It's a far stretch to say that other AM houses will give people "an actual investment role," the only difference is the name of your job. I doubt any firm would allow entries to manage money, everyone's going to get the grunt work no matter where you work (IB, AM, etc.) Basing the skillset off of titles is not a good strategy bro
There's also internal mobility, whos to say you can't just transfer to PM roles after a few years? That sounds more plausible vs trying to break into the buy-side
