Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of investment-focused roles in PWM and institutional AM that go beyond traditional long-only equities:

Private Wealth Management (PWM)

  1. Portfolio Strategist/Manager:

    • Focuses on constructing and managing client portfolios, often tailored to individual needs. This role involves asset allocation, risk management, and investment strategy development.
  2. Research Analyst:

    • Conducts in-depth research on various asset classes (equities, fixed income, alternatives) to support investment decisions for high-net-worth clients.
  3. Chief Investment Office (CIO) Team Roles:

    • Works on macroeconomic analysis, market outlooks, and investment strategy for the entire PWM division. This is more strategic and less client-facing.
  4. Alternative Investments Specialist:

    • Focuses on private equity, hedge funds, real estate, and other non-traditional asset classes for high-net-worth clients.
  5. Fixed Income Specialist:

    • Concentrates on bonds and other fixed-income securities, often for clients seeking stable income or lower-risk investments.

Institutional Asset Management (AM)

  1. Multi-Asset Portfolio Manager:

    • Manages portfolios across various asset classes (equities, fixed income, alternatives) for institutional clients like pension funds and endowments.
  2. Quantitative Analyst:

    • Develops models and algorithms to optimize portfolios, assess risk, and identify investment opportunities.
  3. Credit Analyst:

    • Specializes in analyzing corporate bonds, municipal bonds, or other fixed-income instruments to assess creditworthiness and investment potential.
  4. Private Markets Analyst:

    • Focuses on private equity, infrastructure, or real estate investments for institutional clients.
  5. ESG/Sustainable Investing Analyst:

    • Works on integrating environmental, social, and governance factors into investment strategies.
  6. ETF/Index Strategy Analyst:

    • Develops and manages passive investment products like ETFs or index funds, which are popular in institutional AM.
  7. Hedge Fund Research Analyst:

    • Evaluates hedge fund managers and strategies for inclusion in institutional portfolios.

Key Takeaways

  • In PWM, roles are often more client-specific and involve tailoring strategies to individual needs, while institutional AM roles are broader and focus on managing large pools of capital.
  • If you’re targeting non-sales roles, focus on research, portfolio management, or specialized areas like alternatives or ESG.
  • Firms like BlackRock, Invesco, and others often have rotational programs that allow you to explore multiple areas before specializing.

Let me know if you want more details on any of these roles!
