Rotational Program at Insurance Co. Asset Management Division
Asset Management at Insurance Co.
Interested to learn more about perspectives on this. I potentially have the opportunity to enter at entry-level in a rotational program within the asset management division at a F100 Insurance Co.
How can I prepare for it? CFA?
How does type of insurance product change investment strategy? (Life vs. P&C vs. Health)
Should I focus on opportunities covering fixed income or private markets? (mostly manager selection in various private asset classes, but I do have an interest in Corp Dev/VC/PE)
What are potential exit opportunities?
I would appreciate any input you can provide. Thanks in advance.
Do you have an offer in hand? What firm? Assuming so, I would just wait until you start to work on the CFA. That way they will pay for it, you can focus on enjoying senior year, and ultimately you should get some training anyways so I wouldn't sweat the CFA for preparedness. As for the type of insurance funds, LifeCos tend to take on more investment risk as they typically have a longer duration of liabilities, and as a result don't need to emphasize liquidity as much so they will dabble in alts a bit more. Regardless, IG-rated fixed income will make up the majority of the balance sheet due to the regulations surrounding insurance cos investment constraints. Doesn't mean that is what you should focus on, follow what area interests you most. Exit opps will be dependent on what you focus on, but most likely next step would be moving to a more traditional AM shop.
