Taking CFA when you work in ESG Research? Does it make a sense?

Hi All,

A bit of a background on myself. Have got a background in Economics & Finance (master-level) and am now working in ESG research for an asset manager. My coverage is sovereigns - i.e. I produce ESG research notes on sovereign issuers to help PMs in their sovereign investing decisions.

I really like this area but sometimes I am doubtful whether it is going to have much future going forward. I am also keen on economics and sometimes I think of moving into a more research role (possibly still sovereigns, so would be macroeconomic research, but I would be also open to a company-level research, read: equity/credit research).

Do you think taking a CFA might help in this? Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Maybe you should try building up your research skills, building actionable stock/ credit pitches, networking aggressively (especially within your network now that you're in an AM), while passing CFA L1 to prove knowledge, then decide whether you want to continue the program. Going to be very tough moving from ESG to a proper research role so I would focus on the grind instead of fooling myself with the illusion of progress that studying for the CFA gives
