Technical Skills in AM

As a 2nd year analyst in IBD at a BB, I am wondering what the technical skills are if I were to move to an Asset Manager (equity long-only) in a 1/2 years' experience Research Associate type role? Due to lack of deal-flow, my modelling experience has been limited. Will an asset manager grill on this to the same extent as PE etc.?

Any sort of overview of how the technical skills in IBD vs AM stack up would be very helpful.

Also interested in these positions though I’m coming from background of a couple years in PM at a major mutual fund, would be interested to hear people’s thoughts as well

No clear answer. All depends on the type of shop and ultimately the PM. If it’s a large team of analysts you might be modeling companies and building them up. At this point I would spin the lack of experience as part of why you are looking for something more challenging and a desire to enhance your modeling skills with more experience and hopefully a good mentor. Most new associates won’t have any real experience building new models and if they do, chances are they will need to adapt to the style of the PM and what they want.
